I have never read or heard of Big Nate, but when I saw this one on Netgalley I just needed to read it. The blurb sounded fun and the cover looked interesting.
And I am really happy I got the chance to read it. It was so much fun, I laughed aloud quite a few times (and not only me, my boyfriend also loved the comics).
Nate is a really fun kid, and his antics never got old. I loved how he tried to weasel his way through things, and in the end getting detentions or punishments. He also doesn’t seem to have much luck (with girls, sports or school), though he has good luck with his friends.
His friends are funny too, and they all have a set of characteristics. Which makes it a bit boring at times, but also easy to recognize them by.
In many ways Big Nate reminds me of Charlie Brown. There are quite some similarities. Like having a dog who does extraordinary things, having no luck (also with sports), and how he talks/does. But I don’t mind, because while they share similarities there are also things that are quite different. Still fun to see those similarities.
Most of the comics form a story. Like you would have 4 pages of comics that would form one story, or follow each other. Like in one it would start raining and in the next Nate would call the meteorologist and so on.
The comics are really fun, and like I said before, I laughed aloud quite a few times.
There was one thing that was so-so, and that was the art. It was mostly simple things, and nothing detailed. Luckily the comic mainly focusses on its puns and stories, because I don’t think it would do well on art alone.
All in all, I will be searching if I can find more Big Nate books, and I would recommend this book to everyone who likes comics and silly puns/stories.
