Review for Goosebumps: Monsters at Midnight #1
It is time for Goosebumps! This time in a very delightful comic format.
I generally don’t read the single issues, instead opting to wait for the bundled edition, but I just couldn’t resist reading this one right now! Especially not with Halloween so close by. R.L. Stine is just perfect for this season.
So meet Ginny and Mia. Two girls who are currently living/staying at their grandparents home. I am guessing they are there for vacation, but one never knows. Ginny finds a bookstore and is lured by the prospect of them having the Don’t Go In The Basement book. She wants to know the ending (I know the feeling of leaving a book half read and then having to leave it behind, you will do anything to find out what the ending was).
I was already noping my way out of that bookstore when we first spotted it. I am normally not one to say no to a bookstore, but if it is a creepy one like this? Eh, sorry books, sorry. And when the girls go back (without permission, as always in horror stories like this) at night of course the store is way creepier!
I have to say I didn’t like Ginny that much. I am not sure why, for some reason she just annoyed me. Maybe it had to do with the fact she didn’t seem to get the hint that people wanted to be left alone. Mia also didn’t help, she was a grumpykins, constantly groaning and complaining. But even with two characters as unlikeable as these two, I just couldn’t stop reading. I had to know what was going on in that store, what would happen if Ginny would go in there.
And it was a fun ending, no, I won’t spoil anything. Though I guess… given the cover, there is not much to spoil who the villain is. 🙁
The art was fabulous. I just adore the style (and it was also kind of the reason why I picked up this issue). It is kind of cute and colourful, but it also manages to be creepy in the right spots. Bonus points to the fun little details in the bookstore!
I can’t wait for the next issue! I need to know what will happen next. Will Ginny and Mia be all right? What is x’s plan with the girls? What kind of horrors and terrors can we expect? What other R.L. Stine monsters will pop up? is very excited Recommended to all!
