Blog Tour ~ The Harper Effect by Taryn Bashford ~ Excerpt + Giveaway

Good morning!!!!

Sorry, I am just very excited that I can welcome you all to the Blog Tour for The Harper Effect! The book seems so interesting, and I definitely need a new Tennis book (and then this one also includes secrets and romance) in my life, and I can’t wait to read this one when it comes out on the 15th this month. Squee!

For today’s post I got information on the book and the author, but also a special excerpt, and a giveaway (sorry, US only).

Let’s get this game started, shall we? grabs tennis racket and a ball

Sixteen-year-old Harper was once a rising star on the tennis court–until her coach dropped her for being “mentally weak.” Without tennis, who is she? Her confidence at an all-time low, she secretly turns to her childhood friend, next-door neighbor Jacob–who also happens to be her sister’s very recent ex-boyfriend. If her sister finds out, it will mean a family war.

But when Harper is taken on by a new coach who wants her to train with Colt, a cold, defensive, brooding young tennis phenom, she hits the court all the harder, if only to prove Colt wrong. But as the two learn to become a team, Harper gets glimpses of the vulnerable boy beneath the surface, the boy who was deeply scarred by his family’s dark and scandalous past. The boy she could easily find herself falling for.

As she walks a fine line between Colt’s secrets, her forbidden love, and a game that demands nothing but the best, Harper must decide between her past and her future and between two boys who send her head spinning. Is the cost of winning the game worth losing everything?

A sizzling tennis romance perfect for the summer months, The Harper Effect, will be a grand slam for fans of Kasie West, Miranda Kinneally and Simone Ekeles.

About the author:

Taryn lives the typical writer’s life alongside supportive husband, teen children, and characters from her latest book insisting they help make dinner. This can be disconcerting as Jacob is always sticking his fingers in the cheese sauce and Harper can’t cook.
Taryn’s been an English Literature Honours student, an advertising sales rep and a CEO of an internet company, but writing is her first love. The Harper Effect is her debut novel.

Thank you for having me 😉 I chose this extract because I enjoyed writing it – it’s when Colt is finally learning to trust and let his game face disappear in front of Harper, and he’s ready to reveal some of his secrets, and she’s starting to be aware of certain feelings she’s having for him. I love the start of a romance 😊

Every part of me wants to hug him, but he’s beyond
comfort, and what I’m feeling for him is scarily new and
powerful and shouldn’t even exist.
‘Want to climb the tree again?’ I was going to ask about
the ‘Darling Madeline’ letters, but I think it’s best to change the
subject. I pull both feet out of the river, flicking water at him
on purpose.
He peers up at the branches above. ‘In the dark?’
I jump off the rock, hoping he’ll follow. He does, and
we race to the top by the light of the lantern below. When
we poke our heads through the canopy we whisper, ‘Whoa,’
in unison. It’s a clear night and the stars are glitter-sprayed
across an endless black canvas; the heavens have their own
display of fairy lights.
We breathe in the sky, face to face with the stars.
‘Maybe this is what it feels like to fly.’ Colt’s words are
infused with wonder.
For a while we stay in a comfortable silence, lost in our
own thoughts.
When we get tired of perching in the canopy, we hang out
on the lowest boughs, one of us on either side of the trunk.
Our feet dangle above the carpet of petals and Colt traces
the carving of my name in the trunk. We talk and talk about
nothing important. I love Colt’s chuckle, how it rumbles in
the back of his throat and lights up his eyes. To make him
laugh again, I tell him how I once huffed off the court, aged
fifteen, refusing to shake the umpire’s hand because he made
duff calls.
‘And as I swung my bag over my shoulder my spare bra fell
on the floor at the umpire’s feet.’
Colt falls about laughing and slips off the branch. ‘A
Harper Hunter mood. That would be something to see.’ He
leans against the trunk and I kick at him with a bare foot.
‘Coming from the King of Moodland?’ I say.
‘Guess I am the son of the Spitfire.’ Like turning down a
dimmer switch, the glow of happiness in him fades.
