Review for Mamma Mia! 1. Just the Girls

Review for Mamma Mia! 1. Just the Girls

I received this comic from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.

I had such a laugh at the cover that I couldn’t resist clicking on the Read Now when I saw this one on Netgalley. Then I read the blurb and knew this book and I just had to be together.

This is a delightful and humorous multi-generational family story. Meet Aurélie who is moving back to her grandmother’s place along with her daughter Emma. However, to everyone’s surprise (and mine as I didn’t expect her to look like that) Aurélie’s mom is also back. That poor grandma got all her girls back in one house! What follows are the daily lives of these women and things will get messy and emotional.

Because this one isn’t just about laughs and seeing how 4 generations of women live under the same roof, it is also about family, about Aurélie almost never seeing her mom, about being a single mom and trying to find a job/new place, about the grandmother who loves her family but at times is totally rolling her eyes at all the new-fangled technology they are using, it is also about romance as we see the dad of Emma’s friend try to flirt (and desperately fail) with Emma’s mom. And there is plenty of more. In the beginning you don’t always feel the connection between the family, you see little arguments, little things that made people unhappy, but then later on as the girls get used to living together you see them get closer and find each other again. Learn that it is actually quite fun to have this family time again. Finally they have a chance to be closer as they haven’t had that all the time.
We see Emma learn all sorts of stuff about her family thanks to this, including her finding a letter from Sophie when she was younger on her thoughts for the future which was just so sweet.

I had a laugh at Sophie, who is actually 52 but still acts like she is 30. 😛 She keeps bringing in hot young dudes and also flirting with anything young.

And poor grandma who kept being compared to dinosaurs by her great-grandchild.

The art is very nicely done, I do love the character designs, but other things are also terrific.

All in all, I had such a good time reading this one. I was right, it is right up my alley. I would also recommend it to all, and I can’t wait for the next volume. Will Aurélie find a job? Will Sophie run off again? Will Aurélie start dating that cute single dad? And will great-grandma survive all this? 😛
