Mm, do you mean dark as in horror? Because then I will go for one of the Higurashi manga, that one is DARK. Gritty and full of gore.
But if you mean dark as in realistic but with dark situations then I would have to pick Crank, the first book in the Crank series.

RED VELVET — a book that gave you mixed emotions.
Oh boy, I got quite a few that gave me mixed emotions. But one of my recent ones would be this book. Which was fun on the one hand, but how time worked, how there were suddenly trains that were alive.. it was just too much.

Oh boy, I got plenty of books I would recommend! But my one go-to book is:

COFFEE — a book that you started but never finished.
Oh man, where do I begin? A few years ago I started DNF-ing books, before that, no matter how bad it was, I would just continue it.
Let’s see my latest DNF was this book:
It just didn’t work out for me… It starts with a 9-year old girl stealing, without effort or care, a jewel from the neck of an influential/important person who lives in the palace… From that point on everything seems to just magically go good for that girl.

CARROT — a book with great writing.
Another one for which I got so many options!
Cressida Crowell writes AMAZING stories that will just pull you in and won’t let you go. I love this series, but also her Dragon series.
Gail Carriger is just the best!!! I just love her writing, her characters are ones you root for, there is much too ship, there are kick-ass scenes. It just WOW.
