As an adult, Frances didn’t like to go into dark rooms alone at night. She felt certain that the darkness concealed things normally invisible in the light of day. It wasn’t her parents she feared; the idea they might be watching over her from some other place was one that reassured her. It was more the idea that if her parents could come back, maybe anyone could. And maybe the others weren’t good.
