Lady Sylvia was wearing an old-fashioned red military coat, with all the medals still hanging off it, and a pair of boy’s cricket trousers. She should have looked ridiculous – in fact, had she been walking down the street she would have looked beyond ridiculous. But as Sylvia marched up and down the room, she actually looked quite magnificent. Her hair was completely undressed; she had told me she’d refused since birth to let anyone curl or put ribbons in it. It hung thick and straight to her shoulders and swung from side to side as she marched up and down the room.
