Review for Le Chevalier d’Eon Complete Series (mini reviews combined)

France, Le Chevalier d'Eon 1, Kiriko Yumeji, Tow Ubukata, Historical Fiction, Manga, Psalms, Poets, Royalty, Manga, Horror, DemonsAn exciting, WTF am I reading, weird, but also awesome and kick-ass series. Just a shame about that ending. 😐

So from December 31st to January 14th I finally decided to read this series. It is one of my husband’s manga and I just never felt like reading it. Until the end of December when I was in the mood for a manga and decided it was high time to check out this one. While I did enjoy myself, it was also a very weird manga with demons and poets and some poets go mental and others don’t. There is tons of great action scenes and the art is, at points, quite good. Sadly, we don’t get a lot of answers which makes me sad and the ending was also quite disappointing. Though I also feel for the author as it seems the manga was cancelled while they still had plans. I am still not entirely sure if I would recommend the series. I mean, it is a good one, but with barely getting any answers and the ending being as it is…

For each of the volumes I wrote a small review and I thought I would share these with my blog readers~ Be warned for spoilers, I did try my best to keep vague and I will add spoiler tags if I think it is really a spoiler, but for Volume 8 you will just have to live with my disappointment. XD

Volume 1: Star rating, 3.5 stars: WTF did I just read. Haha. Seriously. This was weird, over the top, and so gore at times… but you know what? I am also intrigued. XD I need to know more about Lia and her brother. About the Chevalier. I need to know if Cecile will be fine (because run girl run). The art is a bit weird/more like a sketch, but still I like how detailed it can be.

France, Le Chevalier d'Eon 1, Kiriko Yumeji, Tow Ubukata, Historical Fiction, Manga, Psalms, Poets, Royalty, Manga, Horror, DemonsVolume 2: Star rating, 4 stars: Another WTF volume but also OH so good. I am really liking this one despite the gore, the weirdness, and the what am I reading-ness. The art is still great (though I wonder if Lia fills her boobs with something or when possessing she gets all the female parts??).
This time we meet new poets, a new leader-ish shadow who is creepy as hell, murder, and we learn more about what happened to Lia.
I do think it is funny that they are constantly going on about palm this and palm that… when the right word would be psalm… The translation is also pretty inconsistent. I have seen it be right once, another time I saw pslam. So um.. XD

France, Le Chevalier d'Eon 1, Kiriko Yumeji, Tow Ubukata, Historical Fiction, Manga, Psalms, Poets, Royalty, Manga, Horror, DemonsVolume 3: Star rating, 4 stars: This was SUCH a kick-ass volume. Things are really heating up and while I am still a bit confused at times (like why call them palms when it is psalms) I am also enjoying myself. It is a weird manga and at times a bit too gore for me, but I am loving it as well. In this one we get more clues on Lia’s murderer and death, we see more scary poets which includes a pair of girls who are either twins or match really well (and they are my favourite enemy at the moment, I hope that doesn’t sound too weird XD), we see poor Leo drag his butt through work and I loved how the Scottish guy had a great solution to his work, and there is more (including a woman named Pompadour). Lots of exciting action scenes with great fights.

France, Le Chevalier d'Eon 1, Kiriko Yumeji, Tow Ubukata, Historical Fiction, Manga, Psalms, Poets, Royalty, Manga, Horror, DemonsVolume 4: Star rating, 4 stars: WOW, they finally got the word right (well, except the dude with the word tattooed on his fingers). FOUR volumes it took them to get the word Psalm right, holy dang. XD
A lot of word play in this one when our group gets stuck inside mirrors, they will have to figure it out! There is an exciting and great battle with the Twins (who turn into something horrific) which I just loved. Love that they started off as two and then became one-ish. Their weapons were also pretty interesting, what they could do with it.
Though the good party also has some great weapons, like the big guy and his lance.
We still don’t get a lot of answers on Lia or the poets, but I do feel we aren’t that far away from getting the truth. I am curious!
A good volume with tons of things happening~

Le Chevalier d'Eon 5, Kiriko Yumeji, Tow Ubukata, Historical Fiction, Fantasy, Horror, Manga, Demons, PsalmsVolume 5: Star rating, 3 stars: A rating lower than the others… this one was just so disgusting and a tad more confusing than the others. I had hoped that we were on track in making it less confusing. Haha, but instead it is just back at confusing. I thought that weird man with the walking stick wasn’t evil.. but I guess he is. Or he is some kind of ambivalent and does whatever he wants, either way confused.
The rats were just freaking disgusting. And that comes from someone who loves rats. The rats were drawn horrifically and nope and that whole egg thing just made me puke. 😐
The art seems to go two ways as well. Pretty and wtf is up with those proportions. It was already a bit hit/miss but haha, it seems to get more and more. XD

VFrance, Le Chevalier d'Eon 1, Kiriko Yumeji, Tow Ubukata, Historical Fiction, Manga, Psalms, Poets, Royalty, Manga, Horror, Demonsolume 6: Star rating, 4 stars: Another kick-ass volume in this series! This time a poet is targeting Douglas and will take anything standing in its way (seriously, so many got killed in this one). It was quite a fun (but gore) action and I was rooting for Douglas. Not sure how I felt about that weirdo in the jail and what he is. What he did with Roble, or with Emma, or how he toyed with Madame. Not my thing, but I am also very curious about him, what he is, what his powers are. Given how old he is, there is a lot to tell.
I loved Emma’s new design, oh yes.
This was a good volume, no answers, but lots of excitement and blood.

France, Le Chevalier d'Eon 1, Kiriko Yumeji, Tow Ubukata, Historical Fiction, Manga, Psalms, Poets, Royalty, Manga, Horror, DemonsVolume 7: Star rating, 4.5 stars: Another amazing book and with a cliffhanger to boot! Guess I will be reading the next (and last) volume in a bit because I need to know how this ends! IN this one Madame makes a big mistake (though I could also kind of understand why she decided on this… but I wished she had thought it through just a tad more), even the church isn’t safe it seems and I was shocked that such a sweet looking man was Satan’s puppet (I am sorry, but I would call him that given all he does in this volume and what he has as daemons). A lot is happening again and tons of action as well. I loved the addition of the sins though holy crap, you can kill the entire world then because as Lia said, no one is without sin (and this also reminds me of a bible quote: “He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.”).

France, Le Chevalier d'Eon 1, Kiriko Yumeji, Tow Ubukata, Historical Fiction, Manga, Psalms, Poets, Royalty, Manga, Horror, DemonsVolume 8: Star rating, 2 stars: WTF!!! flips table It ends like this???????? WHAT?? We will never find out anything?? WHUTTTTT!! I invested all the time in this manga only to find out it has no ending??? Just a non-existent Paris Chapter is over, but where is the REST!! GIve me more!! You cannot end it like this! ARGHHH!
Despite the disappointing ending and the sadness it brought, I did like this volume. Lots of wordplay (French, English, and Latin) and tons of action and a good mystery. I did like that we went 6 months later though I wish they had used that time to give me some more answers. XD
I am glad that his Majesty has forgiven Madame for what she did. I am not sure if I would have done the same if I was in his shoes. XD
