“Friendly competition? Is that why you chose to open directly across the street from me? I filed the permits and the business name with the city. You had to know I was about to open.” She watched confusion grow on his face. It made him look younger, almost vulnerable. She quashed any sympathy she had. “Don’t tell me. You didn’t do the market research?”
He shrugged. “I chose the strip mall because Tony’s dad owns it, and he gave me a good deal on rent.”
“Well, that sounds like a smart marketing plan.” She heard the edge in her voice. She had no patience for incompetence. Before she started this venture, she had done her homework, including taking business classes at the local library. Like her dancing, she poured all her time and attention into her business. To meet someone who didn’t do basic market research, who chose a location due to the cheap rent, well, that got her back up.
“My master’s degree is in chemistry, not marketing,” he snapped. “I don’t know everything.”
“Shocking to hear you admit it.”
He stared at her for a moment, his hands clenched into fists at his sides. “Are you seriously not going to let me into your room?”
She almost laughed. In any other situation the words would be incredibly suggestive. Instead she shook her head. “I’m sorry. I have to protect my work.”
