Review for FEARFUL: Scary Stories of the Curse Filter
I received this book from the author in exchange of an honest review.
The second book in the series and of course I had to say YES to it when I got the mail from the author. I really enjoyed the first book and was curious what kind of creepy things we would get in the newest book!
π Loved the now and then parts! OK, I was a tad worried about the now parts given well, um the whole camera + holy water stuff that was going on. But it added to the excitement, the scariness of it all. I loved that the story slowly unfolded. That we each time got a bit of the truth. That we saw bit by bit what was going on.
π Loved seeing the old crew again, the ones from the previous book. Still hunting for Horrors. Still figuring things out. Still fighting against evil and the apps and such.
π Ex-Machina is also back and OOHHHHH boy, that was creepy and good.
π The cover! So good!
π The ruby pyramid + the store with stuff. Oh no. Never go into that place, but I guess Lizzy was just out of options.
π Diana. She was such a delight and I just loved the descriptions of how she dressed herself. I looked forward to seeing what she was wearing this time round. XD And I loved how she seemed all sweet and cute but you could also feel something off about her. The author did a great job on writing her. Delightfully evil.
π Donnie was such a cute kid. I am happy that he stood up for himself at points and also that he tried to help his sister.
π Rosie. Is she really imaginary or is she more? I cannot remember if she was in the previous book about this town, it’s been a year and I am really terrible with remembering most things, and no that doesn’t have to do with how much I read, even if I read 10 books I would have forgotten most. But she is delightfully creepy with her prophecies and the things she tells Donnie. Better listen!
π The masks. I already am not a fan of masks (thanks for a big part to R.L. Stine!) and this one was supercreepy. It could do a lot of fun features, but also had some horrifying side-effects.
π The Smilers. Holy crap. No thank you big time! Those guys were just way too creepy!
π Scary insects. Yes, I am sure that my sister in law would totally agree that butterflies were evil (she is not a fan).
π The ending and the epic things that happened there. OH YES. OH YES. OH MY. OH MY GOODNESS. NO? YES? Haha, yep, I am keeping it purposely vague. But I can guarantee it was a ride.
πΆ Sorry, Lizzy wasn’t always my favourite MC. Especially in the beginning I had a hard time liking her. I get that she is frustrated and that Blair and her brother are sucky and mean and whatever else, but she just went so far at times. And I also am not a fan of characters who act like tough is the best way. To fight is the best way. Standing up is fine, but sometimes one also has to pick their battles. At times I had to recheck that I had a young girl as POV and not an old grizzled dad or something. Later on Lizzy started to get better, after that whole thing with um Jake and when she finally confided in her mom. Then I saw another Lizzy and I love how determined she was. How she tried to fix things. Try to help out. Try to figure everything out.
π The sucky siblings. I just didn’t like them. At all. I get why they were added, because otherwise Lizzy would have definitely not accepted that offer, but still.. I just wish it was different. I really have a 0 or well -infinity like for bullies or mean kids.
π Ted.
π Eww Matt. Already a bit NOPE on him given what we learn, but then that thing in the garage. Um, no. I hope that he learns that no is no and not that he becomes a creepy dude later on.
But all in all, I had fun reading this one and I read it in one go. Yep. Was thinking of just starting a bit and then suddenly an hour later I was done. Oops! XD That is just how good it was and how scary at times~ I would recommend it and I just want one more thing… MORE stories about this crew + Quiet Falls + Horrors! Give it!
