Zack searched his mind for something else to say, but came up empty. He heard her shift on the couch, but didn’t look up.
“So,” she murmured, “will we have another riding lesson tomorrow?”
He met her gaze and caught the hopeful expression on her face. “You actually want another one?”
She nodded enthusiastically.
“I wasn’t sure after your fall.”
“It wasn’t the horse’s fault. Besides,” she said quickly, then lowered her gaze briefly, “I kind of liked it.” Her eyes widened, obviously remembering how he’d held her after she fell. “The ride, I mean.”
She wasn’t the only one who’d thought about their embrace. The memory of her cradled in his arms sent a jolt through his body. He wanted to touch her, feel the smooth warmth of her skin. His hand practically itched to close the short distance to caress her cheek, but he pressed it flat against the couch’s back cushion and kept himself in check.
“Really? But you were so against it…”
“I know.” She shrugged. “It surprised me, too.”
“Well,” he straightened up, “in that case, the next nice day we have, I think we’ll take a short ride into the hills, maybe have a picnic while we’re there.”
A picnic? He winced inwardly. Where did that come from?
Her eyes widened. “Do you really think that’s a good idea? I mean, I’ve only been on a horse once.”
He tilted his head, assessing her nervousness. “I think you can handle it.” He risked a little tug on a stray curl. “Sometimes it’s best to just jump right in. Besides, I’ve been riding my whole life; I won’t let anything happen to you.”
A rosy blush colored her cheeks and Zack thought she looked even prettier than before.
“I know you won’t,” she said, meeting his gaze boldly and reaching out to place her hand on his bent leg. “Thank you, for all the time you’re spending with me and the lessons, too. I know it wasn’t what you’d planned to do this week, nor was it your responsibility, but I really appreciate it…and I think a picnic tomorrow would be really…nice.”
The heat of her small hand soaked through his jeans and slammed into his groin with the force of a runaway truck. For a moment, he couldn’t breathe, couldn’t think, he could only stare at her delicate fingers resting against his leg. Then he cleared his throat awkwardly. “No problem.” His voice came out like a croak, so he coughed and tried again. “Really, I don’t mind, but another lesson might have to wait a day or two. We got rain coming in tonight.”
Her answering smile nearly knocked him over, and the urge to touch her had him leaning in her direction.
“You’re very generous,” she said as her eyes dropped to his mouth. She licked her lips and looked up again. Her gaze was direct, but the stiffness in her shoulders made her still seem nervous. “How about I…help you with some chores while we wait for the sun to return?”
Is she feeling the pull, too? Was she lingering beside him because she wanted to kiss him as much as he wanted to kiss her? Was she trying to come up with more reasons to spend time with him?
He took a chance and brushed his knuckles against her cheek. She tilted her head into his hand, closed her eyes, and sighed. Zack’s heart skipped a beat. He pushed his hand into her silky hair and moved a little closer.
“Izabel,” he whispered, his whole body humming with total awareness of her.
She met his gaze with soft, languid eyes, darkened with desire, and her lips parted. A look he’d seen many times before, but from her, it meant so much more. He didn’t know what, but he wasn’t in the mood to evaluate it.
With his hand behind her head, he asserted some slight pressure to draw her closer. She didn’t resist, but lifted a hand to his chest as she leaned toward him. His heart thundered beneath her fingers and he felt the distance between them like an ache banding his chest, his nerve endings zapping with anticipation. Only a little farther and she’d be in his arms, her soft breasts pressed into his chest, and her lush lips on his as he tasted his gorgeous goddess for the first time.
She’d nearly fallen against his chest, their lips mere inches from each other, when the light above the stairs came on.
They sprung apart, and Izabel began brushing her hair as if he’d been tangling his fingers in its springy softness for hours. Zack grumbled a curse about living with family as he got up and reached for the TV remote Emmy had left on the chair.
