Stuff About Writing
By April L. Moon, Co-Author of When Cupid Falls First inside the Realm of Midnight anthology
Hey Y’all, I’m April. I want to tell you today a little bit about the behind the scenes of writing When Cupid Falls First. First off, you should know that writing with another author is both fun and challenging, even if you’re already friends. It’s fun, because you have built in feedback, and someone to brainstorm with. It’s challenging because we both have established ways of writing a book that are different. But the coolest thing of all was watching how both of our talents showed up and intertwined to make an insanely good book.
Second, I have to confess I’m a bit of a character snob. Not in a, they have to be rich, have a six-pack, and all of life’s gifts handed to them on a silver platter sort of way, but in a . . . the person needs to feel real to me. I want to think, I could dial Caleb up and ask him to go for a lemonade. Josie would absolutely know exactly what paranormal romance I should read next. I want them to have depth, and be true to who they are. I don’t want you to see me, just them. I’m a raging introvert, after all.
My dear friend Elsie, on the other hand, is a genius at humor and whimsy. The life of a party, who always knows what to say and when to say it. When I found myself going down my deep, dark, dangerous paths, she would lovingly steer us back into joy, fun, and a touch of, did that really just happen? She’s got a true flair for rom-com that I just don’t have, despite being clumsy every single day of my life. So unfair.
But it doesn’t stop there; I’m a stickler for details and accuracy, while her creative imagination knows no bounds. I love researching real places and events, she loves making people laugh. We’re opposite in so many ways.
That being said, it’s only fair to admit that this book was a stretch for both of us. Elsie usually writes laugh out loud, sweet contemporary romance, while I write broody, sexy alpha wolves. So, how do you blend two very different styles? It’s poignant and sweet, with heart and depth . . . plus a super hot fallen angel.
We met in the middle. And to be honest? The middle is where all the magic lives.
Stay sparkly, readers.
Love,
April
