Review for Darkroom
The newest book in the Horrorland (that is what the Dutch series is called) and this time an app, games, and ghosts!
I love that this one was very much set in the now. Our MC (and her best friend) are trying to get big as streamers and I love that! It is not something you often read about in MG/Young Adult, but it is a job/thing that you see more and more of. I am happy that it is represented in this book. And well, what if you are done with the endless zombie stuff? Then you find a game that everyone is warning you about on the net. A dark and scary app. And I was there for it.
Especially when the game got out of hand. Because those ghosts? They are very real. They can hurt you and people around you. Yep. Though I have to say, people going missing was not that scary, but that tooth? OUCH. I just felt that. shivers I loved that there is a deadline as well, I mean, it would be less scary if you just had all the time, but in this one you got a week to defeat the ghosts (making a photograph of them, which sounds easy but is really hard) or else you will join the ghosts! Oh yes. It made it very exciting, especially since our MC gets in trouble (for something I wasn’t that impressed by and found to be a bit exaggerated) and cannot easily get to her phone or streaming equipment. The tension rises and rises and I just love it. The ghosts are freaking terrifying. The twins especially. Dead ghost twins are a trope that is a big NOPE for me, haha.
I loved seeing the MC try to figure out how to defeat them, and I was happy that she at least found an ally to help her out. Who did get that things were getting a bit too real. Too dangerous. Too scary. I loved that despite the scary situation that she kept trying to stream the events.
Her best friend? I did like her, but I would have liked her to be a bit more understanding, then again, if my best friend would talk about ghosts and scary things going bump in the night I may just laugh at first as well. Though I do think that I would eventually understand it is real.
The ending was totally unexpected but I do love it! It reminds me a bit of R.L. Stine books, you always think that things are fine… and then BOOM, surprise. I don’t want to spoil too much, but those last pages, oh boy. Goosebumps.
Oh, and I do want to mention that I much much prefer the Dutch title over the English one. The English one is points to the title but the Dutch one is Het is maar een spel, which translates to It is just a game. Which just fits so well with it, because everyone thinks this is just a game!
While at times I could understand the parents, at other times I wasn’t a fan of them. Yes, school is important, yes, not all streamers earn A LOT of money, but there are always chances you can get big. But you have to invest your time in it. And yes, it won’t always be easy. I just would have liked the parents be a bit more happy with their daughter trying out new things. Instead of hammering on and on about school and taking away her items or even threatening to just sell them all. I am also sad about the ending, it felt too much working in the ways for the parents.
But all in all, this was a good good book and it was frightening as heck. I mean, the ghost lady at the start was scary, but when the twins came around I was just noping so much! I flew through the book, sadly I had to sleep, otherwise I would have finished this book in one go. I cannot wait to get the next book by K.R. Alexander!
