Review for Playground Games
“Maybe if you’d have been my teacher, I’d have been good at sports,” I say as Doug comes up next to me. He snorts. “I’m a games teacher, Gus. Not Jesus.”
I was absolutely delighted when I came across this book on Twitter. The author was promoting it and I was definitely in the mood for more Lily Morton greatness + some wintery fun so I downloaded it and BOY I loved this story so much. Swoony, cute, funny!
😍 Loved that both the characters (and other characters as well) are part of the same school! It made for a really fun setting and I loved seeing them interact with the pupils there. Though, I did feel for Gus who had a kid who just vomited everywhere (which on the one hand was sad, but on the other hand I was laughing my butt off at where he puked). I loved seeing what each of the teachers taught and see them love their pupils and try to help them when they could. Plus, I had a big laugh when we found out why Gus wanted to be a teacher.
😍 Loved that at the beginning we got a dual POV (Gus and Doug) so we could see both of their thoughts on each other (they want each other but they are both thinking it will not be happening) and after that we just get Gus POV only. I loved that~
😍 Gina! While we don’t see her that much, I did love the moments we saw her! She was so sweet and fun to be around.
😍 The skiing trip was just perfection! I just loved seeing them together, Doug making some clear hints + making sure that he and Gus are often together which I just found sweet. I wish I could go on a skiing trip, I never skied, and I would definitely love to try one day. At a real mountain. Not that fake thing in Zoetermeer. Though that fake thing is probably more within my budget, mmm.
😍 Anthony went from being a prickly cactus to something better. OK, he had to be learned a big lesson but eventually he turned out to be not so bad. I am glad that Gus stood up for himself and enacted that little revenge. Teehee.
😍 Seeing Doug romance/court Gus, see him be jealous when an instructor is fawning over the guy he likes, see him get all the things that Gus liked. And how Gus was happy with it, but also confused given that he was still 100% believing that Doug and him wouldn’t work out.
😍 Doug x Gus and their sparks. Geez, these two had so much sparks it surprised me things weren’t going up in flames. I loved seeing the other characters also root for them to figure it out, haha.
😍 That moment on the last day with the snow. OMG, that was so romantic and I was just squeeing in delight. Doug, go!!!
😍 Gus was just such a sweet and fun character and I loved that he was our main character. I really was rooting for him, to find confidence, to see that Doug is really into him.
😍 Those last scenes of the book at the end of the ski-trip when our guys had to stay for a bit longer, OMG, that was just SO HOT and STEAMY. It definitely warmed me up, haha.
😍 I loved that we got an epilogue! I always LOVE LOVE it when a book gives us an epilogue. See how the characters are doing after all this time. See them still be together.
😍 Charlie, aka the librarian. We only see him a bit and learn about his boyfriend, but I need more and I was delighted that he has his own book. Guess I will have to read that very soon!
A super duper sweet read perfect for these colder winter months! Highly recommended!
