Review for Izzy the Inventor and the Curse of Doom

Izzy the Inventor and the Curse of Doom by Zanna Davidson, Elissa Elwick, Girl holding a book and a dragon in the background, children's book, magic, scienceIt is time to combine science and magic with this fun book about a girl inventor going to a magical land to save it!

I found this book in November in my library and just had to bring it along, it looked so much fun! I didn’t know that it was the second book, but thanks to the introductions at the beginning and some basic information + the fact that the book itself doesn’t make you feel like you missed much if you haven’t read the first book, it was all OK!

In this delightful book we meet a little girl named Izzy! She is an inventor and she is really good at it! So good that apparently she can help out in Fairytale Land! Yep, an unicorn, named Henry, is coming for her help (a tiny but very angry fairy just laid a curse of doom on the country and it will spell the end of it all if someone doesn’t solve the challenges, oh my) and I just loved seeing Izzy think of what to bring, what ingredients she should have with her for some of the challenges. And then the fun starts! Because we are going to Fairytale Land!

And I just love Fairytale Land! I loved seeing the various characters that inhabited it (say hi to Sleeping Beauty for instance), see the various lands. And of course, what will happen when the fairy’s curse sets in for good? If people don’t solve her challenges? Well, nothing good! But thankfully here is Izzy and I just loved that instead of magic and brawn, she uses her brain and the stuff she brought with her to complete the challenges! Like making snow! But how to make it more believable? Well, you need some extra help with that! And so we go through each challenge and I just loved seeing what Izzy has brought with her + see her figure it all out!

It was a lot of fun reading this book and I just love the combo of magic x science. I loved seeing Izzy make friends. Meet new fantasy creatures.

And then there are the delightful illustrations by Elissa Elwick! Those just completed the book for me!

Oh, oh, I cannot forget that at the end of the book we get the actual recipes for the experiments that Izzy did! Yes, you can do them yourself, and I definitely want to try my hand on the snow one!

All in all, I would recommend this adorable, creative, original book to everyone. This will be a hit with kids (and adults like me, haha). I hope that there will be many more adventures for Izzy!
