Spell the Month in Books January 2024

wavesHi!

Nichijou, Calendar

Whoop! Welcome to a new Spell the Month! It is time for the first one of 2024! Say hi to January!

I was so excited, but also a bit worried, to get started on this year’s Spell the Month! Worried because these are still the big month plus they feature not just a J but also a Y, books I generally have a hard time finding. But also fun, because I do like a challenge! Haha. And after a bit of searching through my shelves I found all the letters! Yes, this time no authors, all of it is titles! Whoo, what a great start to 2024. I am excited!

This time the month is spelled in TBR (3 books) and books I need to buy ASAP/when they come out (4 books). I hope you all enjoy my choices and let me know what you think of my books~

Jawbreaker by Christina Wyman, Orange/Yellow cover with a girl wearing braces, graphic novelPerfect for fans of Raina Telgemeier’s Smile, a refreshingly honest middle-grade debut novel about toxic sibling rivalry, socioeconomic disparity, and dental drama.

Max Plink’s life is complicated. Her parents aren’t getting along. The school bullies are relentless―and her own sister is the cruelest of them. Worst of all, her mouth is a mess. With a mismatched puzzle of a jaw, Max has a Class II malocclusion, otherwise known as a severe overbite. She already has braces, which means she lives on Advil and soft foods after each orthodontist appointment. But now Max has to wear painful (and totally awkward) orthodontic headgear nicknamed “the jawbreaker.” Could things get any worse?

Yes. The journalism competition Max wants to enter has a video component. But being on camera means showing her face not just to her junior high classmates, but possibly the whole city. Going viral is the last thing Max needs, but winning this competition is what she wants most. Turns out, following her dreams is complicated, too.

Inspired by Christina Wyman’s own experience with a Class II malocclusion, Jawbreaker is a humorous, heartfelt, and refreshingly relatable story.

Anger Bang by Avery Flynn, Romance, Palaeontologist, Pink, Dinosaur wearing a dress/tutu with a yellow background and lots of confetti, romance, Tv show, reality show, wedding, humourSometimes you just need to bang it out…

Shy paleontologist Thea Pope just wants to get through her sister’s ’80s-themed monstrosity of a TV reality-show wedding so she can get to her summer field work. The only problem? Her sister has turned into the ultimate bridezilla – as in pink parasols, organza hats, forcing people to shave and dye their hair levels of over-the-top, it’s-my-day antics – all while on location in a place literally called hell that reeks of sulfur and lost hopes.

The only thing that can make it worse is when her sister declares that she never even wanted Thea in the wedding at all but that the producers insisted. Ouch doesn’t begin to express how much it hurts that her own sister didn’t even want her to be at her wedding.

There’s only one thing Thea can do after her sister finally pushes her too far – she picks the one man at the wedding her sister cannot stand – the groom’s brother, Kade St. James – and has sex with him.

Is it petty revenge that she’ll be rubbing in her sister’s face from now until eternity? Absolutely. Still, it seems like a great idea at the time, and really what could go wrong?

Pretty much everything it turns out.
