Review for The Dog Squad: The Newshound

The Dog Squad The Newshound by Clara Vullliamy, Blue cover with a dog and three kids on it in a parkThe first book in a terrific and fun series that I cannot wait to read more of! Dogs! Mystery! Family!

Early this year I got an ARC from Netgalley for the second book and I just wanted more of this series, so imagine my delight when I saw this book in Dutch at my library! EEP!

In this book we learn how Eva finds Wafer (whose name is Flinter in Dutch, which I am still a bit on the fence about, on the one hand, fab name, on the other hand Wafel would also be a good one) and how she smuggles the cute dog to her home (smuggles being the keywords because 1) her mom is not that into pets and 2) they live in a building that doesn’t allow pets). I just adore that Eva did it though, because it shows she cares. She saw an animal in need and went and help it! And throughout the book the storyline is all about finding out more about Wafer. Who he is, who is owners are, how to keep him (is mom falling for Wafer and how to keep Wafer away from the landlord). It was so much fun to follow Eva and her friends and see them investigate everything. No stone will be left unturned. She will follow all the leads. From newspapers to internet to visiting various places. I really loved that she went so far, though just like Eva herself I was also hoping that she wouldn’t find an owner, haha. Yes, I read the second book so I know how it will end, but still I found myself rooting and hoping.

And next to that we see how Eva and her family start to love the little whippet more and more. See them really embrace the doggo in their lives. I mean, Eva already loved her from the start, her little sister was also on board for quite a bit, but her mom though? I loved (and laughed) at the little details that said that mom kept buying bigger bags, or that moment when mom bought that little coat for Wafer. Mom, you are in deep! Don’t deny it now! You want Wafer to stay forever!

I am so happy with how Wafer was able to stay with Eva. No, it is not a spoiler, just look at the next books, look at the series title. It is Dog Squad!

Oh, and I just love Eva’s friends, they were so fun and I loved that each of them had a talent that brought the whole newspaper together.

The illustrations were once again A-Plus. I just adore them so much. Wafer is drawn so adorably! You just want to step in and give him a big big hug~

All in all, highly recommended! This was just way too much fun. I cannot wait for the third book, I need it in my life! If you love dogs, mystery, newspapers, girls with ideas and fun plans, be sure to check it out!
