Review for Patricia Wants to Cuddle

Patricia Wants to Cuddle by Samantha Allen, Brown fur, horror, reality showLights, camera, action! It is time for a reality show with a very furry and grand finale!

One of the books I really have been meaning to read for a while and I finally was able to buy it and read it! This was a ride.

In the first part of the book we focus mostly on the reality show not just by what we see in the main parts but also in the side parts, but quite soon things change in regards to the side parts. We learn about missing people, we learn about love and two people who love each other, the side parts got a bit boring for me at this point (though I did like how it connected to it all in the end), but the main parts were A-plus.

I love how I didn’t like any of the characters. Haha. Yes, that sounds bad, but in fact I didn’t mind it (well, OK, except for Casey, Casey can just fuck off). The characters were all well-written and I loved that we got the POV of every girl and got to see how they work/what makes them tick/what drives them to be on this show/why they want to be with Jeremy. There are the 4 contestants. Lily-Mae, Vanessa, Amanda, and Renee. Then there is the producer (at least I think she was that) Casey who was the biggest bitch of them all. Her POVS were the hardest to read. The other girls, while mostly unlikeable, did have some good/interesting points that just kept you reading. It is not always easy to write a likeable unlikeable character, if that makes sense, haha. A lot of the times when a character is unlikeable I will be very much off-put and eventually stop reading. But this? The author did a perfect job. Renee was definitely the most tame of them all, but I don’t know, something just struck as unlikeable with me.

I loved reading about the reality show, see how the producers/peeps tried to get all the juicy bits from the girls, get them to fight over things, I loved seeing how everyone thought about the reality show, see them go on dates, and boy oh boy that Truth or Dare one night was just the perfect example of reality TV. I loved seeing each girls views on Jeremy.

I loved seeing things slowly go to a climax, not just in the girls’ attitudes towards each other, but also in regards to the shadows in the forest and what lurks there.

But while there was a lot of good about this the book sadly went down with the later part of the story. There were just points that didn’t make sense to me and in the end I would just say watch out for the Furry Cult that is lurking on this island. I was also off-put by the fact that each time the being came into view we read about it’s big breasts hanging or other descriptions, I was like, boo, something scary is happening and we are focussing on THAT? I am sorry but what? I was even preparing not for people to be dismembered but for sexual assault or something given some things. I also just didn’t get why Renee was spared in the end, probably because she helped out? But it felt more like Stockholm Syndrom with how she acted. Plus, given that the island is pretty much still frequented so much? How are there not more people missing/murdered/disappeared? I mean, Patricia has quite a temper. Geez.

But other than the ending I did like this book a lot. I flew through it and I love the blend of reality show along with horror elements. It is just the ending that spiralled out of control.
