Review for Try Not to Die #1: At Grandma’s House
A spooky (and very Final Destination) choose your own adventure of two kids who go to live with their grandparents.
I came across this one on Twitter? Maybe a blogger? And I just had to have it. Horror x choose your own adventures? Heck yeah!
😨Seeing how it all started for our two kids and what happened to them. It was definitely sad and shocking, and really set the tone of the book.
👻The grandparents were terrifying, though in the later parts I wasn’t sure if they were really that bad… So I am still on the fence. On the one hand I can see that they care, but on the other hand the things they do/say/how they act is just not good.
😱The bad endings? Well, prepare for Final Destination kind of deaths. For reals. I had NOT expected that given that I thought this was a MG/young YA. My stomach was NOT happy, haha. The details. YIKES (just to name one, the MC at one point falls of a branch… gets impaled on the fence below him as he lands with his jaw/neck on it and then more disgusting details pop up, yup). That is also what gave me some “fun” nightmares. Thanks.
😍The choose your own adventure part. That is what sold me next to the horror parts. You can get quite a few choices, a lot of them are bad endings, but there are some good ones as well. I liked that just by reading most of the choices you aren’t sure which will bring a good ending or a step in the right direction. Sometimes you can just read from the choices if something will go bad or not, but here at times I was like, wait will this lead to good or bad? I love that my Kindle was able to do this book, I have had a few of these books not work, which meant I had to map things out, thankfully not this one.
😀The characters were quite interesting, though I have to say that our MC didn’t really feel like 15/16? His sister felt more like 10-ish at times. But I did like both of them and how different they were. Our MC was more laid-back, more chill, whereas his sister was more gung-ho and went for things without always thinking about it.
🥰That cover is just so cool!
😮Seeing what the beast is, what the creatures are, and what grandpa is up to. In regards to the beast, I have to say that I had a suspicion early on. I won’t spoil it, but it wasn’t that hard to deduce.
🙀The last part of the story in which everything goes up a level and things get very harrow and scary.
😕I am not sure how I felt about the ending. After all this, I expected something grand, something WOW. Maybe there is another good ending that is hidden under everything, I tried going back and forth with each option, but maybe I just missed one.
But all in all, I am very happy with this book! It was spooky, creepy, scary, and you are constantly on your toes. What is going on in that house? I would recommend it!

This sounds so fun! I love Choose Your Own Adventure books, I hope they make a comeback properly one day.
Same! I would LOVE more CYOA books, especially when they are horror! Well, I still got plenty of R.L. Stine CYOA books to go through though, haha.
