Review for 100 First Words for Little Utahns

100 First Words for Little Utahns A Board Book by Christopher Robbins, McKay RappleyeaI received this book from Netgalley/the publisher in exchange of an honest review.

What I expected: A fun book to learn some new words from Utah. What I got: A lot of confusion.

Since this was a first 100 words book I thought this would be perfect for me, someone who is not an Utahn. I would learn some new words. Some new geography/fun facts. I was eager to dive in. Sadly, I wonder if this is more a joke book / maybe a teehee this is perfect for adult Utahns so they can nod and agree. Because while there were several things that made sense to me, a lot of them didn’t. And some are not even found on Google or have mixed results that I don’t even know what is right or not. For instance, what the heck is DTR? Or what is MTC? Or MLM (other than Man love man, haha)? What is the meaning of 47 with a cart? I know it is sports, but what is the Holy War? What does Deseret have to do with a hive of bees (I can only find it is a place??). And I could continue. I kept finding words or just simple abbreviations that I was seriously confused by. I was really hoping it was more like all those other fun 100 words books. Like apple. Honey. Cheese. But then in another accent/local ways to say such a thing. Instead I ended up with an headache. My hubby was curious what I was reading, especially when I asked him if he maybe knew DTR. He was also confused. Haha.

I also don’t know why toddlers/babies have to learn things like DTR? You want these books to be simple and easily understandable.

So this was a big big disappointment. I did like the art style. The illustrations weren’t always clear so that is a minus-point, but at least they were fun to look at.

I cannot rate this book very high. For the stuff I did understand + the art style I give at least a star. But that is it.

Star rating, 1 stars
