Review: Horror Collector, Vol. 3: The Laughter in the Dead of Night

Horror Collector, Vol. 3 The Laughter in the Dead of Night by Midori Sato, Yon, Norio Tsuruta, Boy with determined look in his eyes surrounded by scary beingsThe third book and we get new supernatural stuff, a mysterious new character, and more! This was SPOOKY!

I just LOVE LOVE this series so much, I am a bit fan of supernatural stuff and urban legends and this one gives us new ones each book, some that I already know but some that I also don’t!

In this one we have 6 towns again and we meet various mysterious things, plus, like with all the books there is also the overlapping/connecting story of Fushigi trying to find his sister and also fix whatever she is doing in the various towns (because a lot of the spooky things are her doing). I am still curious about the sister and how she makes all these events happen, and also why. Is it for fun? Is it because she has a mission? Is it something else? Plus, last time we met Jimmy, the dog with a human face, well he is now part of the cast. I wasn’t sure at first how I felt about that, but he adds a bit of human emotion to the mix, because Fushigi is mostly just in the towns to fix things and doesn’t always seem to care about the humans that are cursed.

This time we go to a town with a bus driving through it and you definitely don’t want to board it. I really enjoyed that first story, though I wasn’t a fan of the girl that much. Still, it was a spooky story! Then there is a mystery restaurant with stuff you DON’T WANT TO EAT, OMG, I was just horrified reading this one as I had a quick idea of what was happening. The woman in the gap story was definitely the spookiest for me because hot dang it was just terrifying. The fact that there is no safety, any gap can be your death, NOPE NOPE NOPE. And we also have 3 other stories that I adored and that spooked me so badly. I definitely do love that this author doesn’t shy away from things. A lot of horror, especially for kids, shy away from bad endings, but in this one? Oh you will get some bad endings.

Plus, we get an additional character as well, another family member? This time it is a guy with an umbrella and we get some mysterious happenings with that person. I am curious about him so much, I need to know more, see more of him, what his motivations are.

The manga art throughout the volume were just wonderful again! They made things extra spooky, and just gave extra dimension to the light novel!

All in all, I cannot wait for the next volume in this series, what more will we learn, what new legends will we get, and more. I would HIGHLY recommend this series to everyone!
