Review: Yuriota ni Yuri wa Gohatto Desu!?, Vol.1
What do you get when you mix Strawberry Panic x Maria-sama x gal x yuri otaku? This very fun manga!
Meet Watanabe Fuyu a very plain girl (her words) who LOVES yuri. Like, seriously, this girl loves it so much she is an otaku for it and could tell you all the flags, all the events, and will fangirl excessively when faced with yuri. That is also why she fought hard to get a place in a local all girl high school. She needed that yuri. At the beginning things are fine, but what if one of her classmates is a gal? And what if that gal has absolutely ZERO sense of the yuri that takes place around her? I really laughed out loud so many times while reading it, because Watanabe is doing her bestest to get all the couples together, all the soeur events happening, all the flags to go, to make yuri heaven happen, but our gal, Yoshioka, is just oblivious to it all. Doesn’t know anything about that stuff and just casually crashes things, comes between stuff, invites girls who have imouto/oneesama events. Not to mention that Watanabe is terrified that her wonderful girl heaven will be turned into a gal heaven. Yup! You can imagine the chaos! I loved every bit of it.
Plus, because Watanabe is inserting herself so much with Yoshioka + the fact that Yoshioka found out about a certain hobby of Watanabe… Yoshioka is now believing that Watanabe is in love with her. OH YES. You can just imagine the events that happen with that. And you know, I have to say? I am actually kinda hoping for that ship to go. Yes, Watanabe is very much in the I don’t deserve yuri/don’t want to be yuri myself, but I am still rooting for them. It would be perfect! That last scene in the ferris wheel? YESSSS!
And I love seeing all the couples in this manga and see them grow. We got a prince x shy girl couple, a president x first year couple, and in the background you can see a few others. It was great that the author let us see how these couples are doing. Then again, you cannot not do it given how focussed our MC is with getting all the events happening for these couples.
Oh, and I love love all the stuff happening at school. The events I remember so fondly from Strawberry Panic and Maria-sama. Like the soeur system of kouhai and senpai. The Cinderella event. The rose garden. The way the girls greet each other. The fanclubs for the most popular girl. And others. I seriously want to read Strawberry Panic/Maria-Sama again.
The art is fun. I am not sure how I feel about the reactions of Watanabe/the chibified stuff, but I guess it does show Watanabe’s otaku vibes just a bit better.
All in all, this was fun! If you like Strawberry Panic/Maria-sama and other yuri manga taking place at a fancy school, plus you love chaos, this one is for you!
