Review: Maimaimaigoen, Vol.1

Maimaimaigoen, Vol.1 by Yakan Nabeya, A group of kids having fun16 elementary students, 2 teachers, and a trip to Sanrio Puroland. But what if they enter a door and find themselves in Yuropia? Be prepared for scares!

I came across this one and immediately was intrigued. I was wondering how this would go and how dark it would go, well, I can tell you, pretty dang dark.

This one starts pretty laid back with a fun day at Sanrio Puroland, and boy I wish I was part of the group because this sounds like the park for me. I would need some extra money because I am definitely buying ALL the merchandise, haha. We get a bit of a feel of the characters, not just the tiny kids and what makes them tick + their bonds, but also the two teachers. Rumi who is more mature and very much loved by the kids and Yuu-sensei who most of the kids treat like an idiot/loveable idiot. They are having a lot of fun at the park, but then one of them notices a door and they decide to go through that, well, that is one decision they will regret. Because they are now at a sort of dark Sanrio Puroland park with fucked up creatures and scary rules. The kids and the teachers are stuck. And to get out? Well, you have to get 10 medals! And you get 5 to start off. To win medals you have to do attractions. Which sound easy and not that scary right? Just do some attractions, get medals, win prizes, and get out? But the attractions are filled with tricks and fears and scary things and getting medals turns out not to be that easy. Not to mention… each day that you are there you have to pay ONE medal. Oh, and you don’t want to know what happens when you have no medals to pay off your daily contribution. Oh nope. That was pretty shocking. I had expected something happen, but that? Nope.

And as the chapters continue we see the kids try to make the best of the situation, but we all know how people are in crisis/scary situations. Tension rise, fears come out, personalities go dark (or the true personalities come to light). It was quite a psychological trip to see how the kids went from all friends and sweet to each other to arguments, some bullying, some harsh comments, and more. And the most responsible of the adults? Well, I felt for her. That is all I will say. She is not dead, but there is something else with her. And who can blame her?

Oh, and the attractions? They fuck with you. They find your biggest fears, the worst worries, and shows them to you, brings them to the surface. Plus, if you fail.. well, there are consequences. It is not a fun attraction park.

Things get really scary and desperate and I am curious to see how this manga will continue and what will happen to the group of kids/teachers. I am so worried for each of them and I just want them all to be save.

The art also really fits with the story. It is at points quite cutesy, but then when it gets dark the art also goes dark.

All in all, if you want a dark manga with scary situations, hopelessness, and fears, be sure to check it out.
