A happy welcome to the Review Tour for Jumping Hurdles by Sarah Surgey! You may remember seeing this one 6 days ago when I celebrated the Release Day! Today I am back with a 4-starred review! I really loved and adored this book and I would recommend it~

Let’s get started!

Review

I received this book from Hygge Book Tours/the publisher in exchange of an honest review.

I just couldn’t say no when I got the request to be part of the tour/review this book. It looked so adorable, and I loved that it featured a topic we don’t see in books, Dyspraxia. See how it affects a little girl and how she tries to make the best Sports Day despite that.

In this book we meet Bea, a little girl who just had her diagnosis and is not happy because Sports Day is coming up and she wants to have the BEST one. Win everything. Be part of everything. We see that the day starts with stress and worry, but quickly we see that Bea discovers that while she may have Dyspraxia and all that comes with it, but she has other strengths. I just LOVED seeing her discover those and see her have more and more fun with each new part of the Sports Day. I found myself rooting so much for this little girl and I was excited to see that the day was turning out to be a good one for her. Things like hurdles, she cannot do that running, but she found a way that works for her and I wished I could step into the book and be part of the cheering that happened while she was running.

Yes, the kids are also seeing that Bea is trying her best and I loved that they saw that. In the beginning they were quite not so nice, reminding me of my school days in which I also never got picked because I have asthma, but as the story goes on we see kids help her out with small bits and later even cheer for her. And that just made me smile so much. I am happy that the kids also saw that despite the Dyspraxia Bea is still a strong girl who wants to win just as much as they want to win.

The illustrations by Nathasha Gunathilake are gorgeous, sweet, cute, adorable, and I just love how colourful they are.

I would have liked a bit more information about Dyspraxia. We learn some bits about it through Bea and what she says, but it is not enough for me. So I will be googling things very soon to find out more.

All in all, this was an adorable book with a MC you want to root for, cheer for + a very fun Sports Day with all sorts of events. I would recommend it to everyone.

Star rating, 4 stars

Jumping Hurdles by Sarah Surgey, Little girl jumping hurdles on sports dayBea is a determined and resourceful 7-year-old girl. She has just been diagnosed with Dyspraxia, which she still doesn’t quite understand yet. What she does know is that sometimes things feel a little harder for her to do, unlike her friends. Bea’s been told she’s a “little clumsy”, so sports day might be more challenging than she first thought. But through her determination and willpower, Bea realises that Dyspraxia hasn’t replaced her other strengths. She can still reach the end of the race; she needs to use her other qualities.
Jumping Hurdles is an uplifting picture book that highlights one girl’s reality of having a diagnosis. A beautiful SEL book that promotes positivity for children with Dyspraxia whilst teaching empathy and understanding for those who don’t.
