Review: Beat This Book!
I received this book from Edelweiss in exchange of an honest review.
A book with that title? A book illustrated by Gemma Correll (one of my favourite illustrators)? SIGN ME UP! I needed this book badly in my life. And here we are!
In this hilarious book we meet Book, and we have to beat the Book, but can we really do that? Because Book? Book isn’t ready to be defeated and has some fun, nefarious, silly, great challenges ready for you. Like finding a small dog. Or making shapes with your body (what noodles and pretzels can you do). Or making a racket! There are tons of fun challenges and each page was just a feast and oh so much fun, I never was bored, I was just looking forward more and more to each page! I loved the little commentaries with each challenge and I loved how he just kept talking and giving answers back.
I loved that at one point the book was hoping that we would use him for something else. Apparently he has had some not so fun experiences, like to make a table less wobbly (GASP). I guess I would also become a bit grumpy and set challenges if someone did that to me. And so I was kind of looking forward to just making the book smile. Beating him of course as well, but giving him a smile and some love was getting even more priority now.
Oh, and this made me laugh: “Please don’t hold your breath for five months. You are not a fish.” Oh are you sure I am not? XD
The last page was just fabulous! That made me laugh. OK, and scroll back as I hadn’t expected that to be the ending.
The art by Gemma Correll was once again super-b and I really loved every bit of it.
All in all, this is a book that made me laugh, snicker, I learned some new things (that is one tall creature), and I love love the art. I would highly recommend it to all!
