Review: Oh No They Didn’t: Presidents
I received this book from Edelweiss in exchange of an honest review.
This is the perfect book for me. I know some about the presidents of the US, but I am not a US citizen so I don’t know everything (plus, I can seriously never remember their names, haha). So I was eager to read this one and learn a lot more about them. And I can tell you that I learned quite some new facts and bits!
I loved that this book wasn’t just 100% about presidents. Yes, it is the main bit of course, the biggest part. But we also learn about The White House, about how to become a president, we read about the VPS, the First Ladies, about hobbies and pets. It was just so fun and I am happy they did. I am not sure if I would have liked a 60+ page book to be just about the presidents, even if they are very interesting. Now the book feels more rounded.
The first part of the book is of course about the presidents, we read about all the presidents we had, get some facts and fiction, myths busted. Some presidents just got a small bit of attention, others way more. I didn’t know that Jimmy Carter had a peanut farm, or how Harry S. Truman had a haberdashy! Or that early in the days drinking the water at the White House was just not a good idea, unless you wanted to either have stomach cramps or die. Apparently James Buchanan’s first lady was his sister as he never married! And so I learned even more facts about presidents.
Next up is VPs and First Ladies and it was quite fun to see that some VPs became presidents (I knew of Biden, but didn’t know there were others). I also liked reading about First Ladies + see their hobbies.
I think, sorry to the presidents and everyone around them, my favourite section would be the pets! Reading what pets everyone had, from cute dogs to goats to cows. I had a bit of a laugh at some of them. Haha.
I loved that at the end we get a glossary with some extra terms/special things and what it was.
I also really liked the illustrations in the book! The style was just so fun~
All in all, this is a book I would highly recommend. Fun for the US peeps, but also a lot of fun for peeps outside of the US who want to learn more about the US presidents (and VPs) + the history of them + much more!
