Review: Sayonara Magic: Wizards in School

Sayonara Magic Wizards in School by Burakkuberi, Ana C. Sanchéz, Yellow cover with three kids on the cover, magicI received this book from Edelweiss/the publisher in exchange of an honest review.

In the past years I read Alter Ego and Sirius, two graphic novels with manga-style art and loved both of them, so imagine my delight seeing a new series by her and another author/illustrator! This time featuring kids and magic! Sign me up!

In this book we meet three kids, triplets! Say hello to Naoki, Hiro, and Akira. Hiro is the MC of the story, he tells us all the mishaps that happened and we see the events through his eyes! Hiro was a fun character, but boy does he need to learn that magic isn’t something light-hearted. In this book we get two stories and the first one is all about Hiro who doesn’t want to study so he uses a spell so he can see what questions will be on the test. Yes, that is at least one saving grace, he was planning on studying, but just wanted to do as little as possible. But that spell really goes out of hand and I was just laughing my butt off. Sometimes being invisible isn’t the most fun.. especially when EVERYTHING goes invisible when you touch it. OH YES. I loved the pure chaos of it all and I could definitely understand the reactions of his siblings and while I would have liked them to talk to their dad, given his earlier threat (which I will talk about in a bit) I guess I would have also gone for a plan with my siblings over going to dad. XD I loved seeing how things really escalated and see the triplets try everything.

The second one is all about Naoki. Naoki wants to be more confident.. but where is the line between confident and rude? Well, with a spell and a sparkle we will find out! I really liked this story, though I wasn’t a fan of Naoki. But again, I can forgive him because he was under the influence of a spell and I could also understand him wanting more confidence. When you have a girl you like so badly but are not able to talk to her AT ALL and you really want to take the next step? Yes. I can understand that. But BOY, the chaos that ensues from that spell. Not just everyone wanting to just yeet Naoki, but also a field trip going totally bonkers. I was just gasping and enjoying the chaos. Seriously, I needed some popcorn because it was so hilarious and such a trainwreck.

I really loved the other siblings, Akira the feisty one who you don’t want to mess with and Naoki the calmer twin with all the brain. They were such fun characters and I wouldn’t mind a book with either of them as the MC.

Bonus points to Maru! She was such a sweet cinnamon roll and I love how adorable she was! Plus, she really helped out the triplets on several points in the story!

And now on that threat. The kids apparently have gotten in a fair amount of trouble with their magics and dad is now on the verge of sending them to a school for wizards. We see that he is quite serious about it and the triplets DEFINITELY don’t want to leave their fun school life. They just want to stay.

I love the magic in this book and see how it works!

I had such a laugh at the consequences of that undo spell. OH MAN. That is just painful! And sorry, hilarious as well. I guess that is one way to make sure someone doesn’t screw up too badly, but I guess for kids it is just not working entirely. I felt for the dad in the later part when he asked how many things would be undone. RIP.

I really love the manga-style illustrations, I love how many of them there were and how at times we even got some pages with just illustrations! I just love it when that happens, that the story is continued in fun illustrations.

There was just ONE thing I wasn’t a fan of in the book. And that is actually a person. She is named Hina. And I get that one time things went wrong, but she was just a bully. She was mean. Rude. And I just hope that either she doesn’t show up in the later books as much or that she at least gives the triplets a chance.

All in all, a magical fun series that I will keep on reading! I would recommend it to all!
