Spell the Month in Books September 2024

Hey all!

Nichijou, Calendar

A happy welcome to a new Spell the Month in Books! It is one of the tall big boys again, hello September!

I was a bit worried about doing this one, I mean, 3 (THREEE!!!) E’s. Would I find them? And all the other letters as well? Well, I can happily announce, heck yes I did! I actually had fun with this long big boy month. dances

Let’s see, this time the books are split in: 1 Read (Education of Malice), 1 from my library stack (Shadows in the Moonlight), 1 is from my Netgalley/EW stack (Meschugge) and the rest is books that I desperately need in my life and with the exception of one, I would prefer them all for Spooktober (the season of SPOOOKYYYY). But sadly, prices are high and books aren’t the easiest to find, and the Book of Bill… well, I am kinda giving up on that one. I pre-ordered it in July, then the pre-order was cancelled because the book wasn’t coming, I ordered at other places, orders got cancelled. At this point? I am just praying that maybe one day I can read it. So cross your fingers for me and help me hope for Book of Bill, but also of course all the other books. They are so perfectly spooooky.

What books did you pick for this month? Are you also looking forward to Spooktober?? Let me know in the comments~

Exit Nowhere by Juliana Brandt, 4 kids on an Escher-like staircase searching for cluesHaunted Mansion meets the ultimate escape room in this tense and twisty middle grade horror following four kids who must beat a series of games to make it out of a haunted house.

The creepiest place in Barret Eloise’s small town is the abandoned Raithfield Manor, a decrepit house surrounded by rumors of ghosts and kids going missing. So she certainly never planned on stepping foot inside. But when her history teacher gives her a group project to research a local landmark, the manor is the location her group chooses. Determined to ace the project and fix her awkward first impression on her assigned partners—which include her former friend Helena, smart and confident Wayne, and school basketball star Ridge—Barret Eloise isn’t about to let some tall tales scare her off.

When the kids first enter the house, it seems to be nothing more than an empty building. But when the sun goes down, the doors and windows lock, sealing them inside. Even worse, the room they’re in transforms into an all-too-real game of The Floor is Lava. It doesn’t take long for the group to realize the mansion is a maze of childhood games. Win the game and you keep moving forward, lose and you disappear. And complicating it all is a worrying revelation—they are not alone in the house.

If Barret Eloise wants to make it home, she and her dysfunctional group are going to have to learn to work together quickly.

Portrait of a Shadow by Meriam Metoui, Face of a woman screaming while hands come out of the frameA missing sister. A mysterious boy. And a painting that holds the truth beneath its peeling edge…

Inez is missing, but missing things can always be found.

Mae knows this as a fact, even though the police investigation has come to a standstill, even though her parents are moving on. But when she goes to clear out her older sister’s studio, she finds a mess of research and a white canvas that seems even older than the ornate frame it is set in. The closer Mae gets to the canvas, the more difficult it is to pull her eyes away from its mottled surface, its heavy layers of white paint, its peeling top corner she is tempted to pull to see what’s beneath. But she doesn’t. Not yet.

Mae decides to trace her sister’s last steps in the hopes of finding answers, certain that Inez’s disappearance is related to the painting. And she knows she is desperate enough to let the strange boy who claims to have been Inez’s neighbor tag along. Even if his good looks don’t help distract from his avoidance of her questions. So begins a scavenger hunt piecing together what they can find from what Inez left behind. One that leads to centuries-old questions best left unasked and secrets best kept in the dark.

From the author of A Guide to the Dark comes another tender horror story about the lengths we are willing to go for the truth and the ones we love.
