Review: Detective Beans & The Case of the Missing Hat
I received this book from Edelweiss/the publisher in exchange of an honest review.
I was SO freaking hyped when I spotted this book on Edelweiss! I follow Li Chen on Twitter for some time now and I was all excited to read a graphic novel by her. And this was just the cutest. Believe me!
In this adorable and super cute book we meet a little Kitten named Beans. Beans has BIG plans, he wants to be a detective, just like those of his favourite tv-shows and movies! Well, he gets his first case when his hat goes missing at night! What happened to his hat and will Beans find the hat? I loved how the journey to find his hat doesn’t just bring Beans through the city and meeting all sorts of new characters, but he also goes through different dimensions. Yes, I can hear you ask questions now, but you will just have to read. I did feel for Beans at times. Each time he seemed SO SO close to things and then something or another would happen and he would have to get very clever about things. Sometimes even with the help of his best friend (that plan just made me giggle it was so fun).
I loved seeing the journey go through the city and I wished so much that I could just step in at times and hop along with Beans for real. See those pigeons. Though I would like my ice cream to be normal, eww snails.
I loved that he knew exactly how his hat was. It may look like a regular hat, but oh no. There is something special about the hat. Like the fact that the first hat he encountered was more round wavy instead of pointy wavy. That just made me smile. He wasn’t going to be accepting any hat, oh no, it was going to be HIS hat.
Oh, and if you think it is just about a hat, there is much more to it including diamonds and bunnies. Especially the diamond part I hadn’t expected but that was just a perfect addition to it. OK, I have to say I wasn’t such a fan of the cops at first, but thankfully they turned around and I was laughing so much at how silly they were.
Mom was just a lot of fun, I loved how sweet she was and how she was all chill. Beans was like panicking and all she said was: “I think you look cute as a button with or without a hat.” She really supports him, but also cannot help but shower him with cute compliments which he may not be certain about because he wants to be a big boy/hard-boiled detective. XD
Oh, OH, OH, I cannot forget that we got to see the secret note taker that Beans was investigating! So cute!
The art was just oodles of fun! I love Li Chen’s art and I am happy to get so many pages of it!
All in all, if you need a fun detective story featuring a determined and brave kitten and don’t mind snail ice cream, be sure to check this one out! And as for me, I would love more Detective Beans!
