Review: Debu to Love to Ayamachi to!, Vol.1

Debu to Love to Ayamachi to! 1 by MamakariAn accident, amnesia, and a girl being happy in her body no matter the size.

It was on Twitter that people were commenting on a manga about a girl losing weight for her love and then giving recommendations with plus-size heroines that don’t do that and are accepting their bodies that I found this one. And I am so happy I did because this was just such a fun manga with a nice dose of suspense.

We meet Yumeko, a plus-size girl who we first meet in an ambulance and the next moment in the hospital. She has zero memories of who she is. Which leads to some fun theories, because is she really Yumeko or is she someone else? I have read plenty, seriously PLENTY of isekai/transcendence manga and everything screams this. But who knows, so I am definitely looking forward to further volumes and see her recover her memories + find out if she is really Yumeko.

Yumeko is such a sweet and fun character and I just love how preppy and happy she is. She loves her body, and that is pretty rare in manga as a lot of plus-sized heroines try to get that weight down, but Yumeko accepts it and wears her prettiest clothes (or well, buys some new clothes because she isn’t too happy with what is in the closet). It was fun seeing her try and figure out what was going on with her life. From finding dozens of pictures of a hot hunk on her phone to going to work and figuring out her work situations to settling into things more and more. I just couldn’t stop reading. I loved how Yumeko wasn’t too fazed by all the new stuff happening/the confusion. She just made the best of it and tried to figure it all out. Didn’t hide it either, just told people clearly and immediately. I also love that when she saw that sad text in one of the notebooks she added her own happier note to it.

We meet various characters along the way and I just have no clue what to think of them so far. We have the hot hunk, who is apparently the vice president. They definitely have a click, but I am still wondering about those photographs. Then there is the boss who is a bit of a grump. There is her female colleague who is a bit done with being treated the way she is (which I could understand when we learn more about her but at first I wasn’t a fan). And of course Yumeko’s parents who don’t know how to handle this preppy new version of their daughter, haha.

But then near the end there is an investigation happening that adds something extra to the whole thing, though I have to say I found the officers to be a dick. Especially the older one.

The art was just so fun, I love how the characters are drawn, especially Yumeko! You can just see her sparkling personality shine through.

All in all, I need to read on! This was such a fun volume and it promises a lot! I need to discover more hints and see what is the truth! Plus, again, a plus-size heroine who is happy/OK with herself? Sign me up!
