Review: Sinterklaas
A really fun wordless book about Sinterklaas! Which is celebrated today!
This book was released in 2007 apparently, haha, I didn’t find out about it until a few weeks ago when I was at the library going through a big stack of Sinterklaas books to take home with me! I just LOVE Charlotte Dematons’ work and I am always happy to pick them up when I see them at the library. And since this book is totally wordless (with the exception of the back blurb which made me laugh and smile because it was just such a creative way to tell about the book) even my English readers can pick it up!
This book is, as you may have guessed, all about Sinterklaas! For those not in the know, check out the Wikipedia link to get some more information. I really love the holiday, OK, not as much as I did when I was a kid, and definitely not as much after all the stuff that is happening lately. But I still get excited a bit about the holidays. Grabbing chocolate. Getting speculaas and pepernoten and more. Seeing decorations in store pop up. Back to the book, in this delightful book we follow Sinterklaas and his Pieten on their journey to the Netherlands. First we see the place where Sinterklaas lives along with his Pieten which I just absolutely loved and made me want to hop into a book to see if I could make it in, haha. Still nothing, sadly. We see how everyone is preparing for the party in the Netherlands, we see Pieten who learn about packages, about what to get, about acrobatics (because they have to climb and do some fun stunts). And then we see the journey over the seas from Spain to the Netherlands, and then finally Sinterklaas is here and we see all that happens! Because of course it isn’t just simple doing x and y presents here and presents there. Oh no! Even with all the Pieten he brought with him there is always room for more! And again, I wished I could step in, because I would love to be part of the Hulppieten training! I loved seeing the days pass and see the Pieten and Sinterklaas have a wonderful time, because they do. There is a ton of chaos as they try to get all the packages delivered. And then there is the fun ending which made me smile because we don’t always see that part~
Other than seeing everything that is happening for Sinterklaas, each gorgeous illustrated two-page spread has plenty of details. People/animals/other things popping up in each of them. Seeing what the Pieten get up to. You will feast your eyes on these gorgeous illustrations and you will be lost for a while with each of them. I love it!
I would highly recommend this book. Again, it is wordless so it is for everyone! Be part of the fun celebrations~ And a very Happy Sinterklaas to my Dutch readers!
