Review

I received this book from The Children’s Book Review + the authors in exchange of an honest review.

Just look at that cover, that just screams: “READ MEEEEEE!” So I just had to sign up for this one and well here we are! I was so eager to read this book and see what this little puppy got up to in New York!

First up we start with a map of New York with some special spots like Central Park, The Statue of Liberty, Times Square. Along with that we see a little trail of footprints that I just found super adorable and it made me definitely even more eager to read!

I had thought that this dog travelled with his owner everywhere, but oh no, Charlie has a special trick! He does a little wag of his tail and thinks where to go and poof he ends up there! In the photographs next to his little dog house under the stairs we spy a lot of other fun spots that Charlie has visited! But this time we are going to New York, and I was excited to see what Charlie would get up to. He visits a lot of fun places from the zoo to see the penguins to the Statue of Liberty who holds her torch with pride to the neon lights of Times Square! At times I just wanted to hop in the book and come along with Charlie. Oh if only I had a magical trick like Charlie. Can you imagine? Just shake a body part and think real hard and poof a new city or country is there! I had so much fun watching Charlie and I just wish the day wouldn’t end. But Charlie has to go home (which begs the question, because I am an adult, do his humans know his secret?) and enjoy a good nap, today was a busy day!

The art was really fun and the style was very cute so very befitting for the book, though at times I wish Charlie’s proportions were more correct. For some bits I could understand exaggerating it, but in other places it was odd that a puppy is the same size as a human adult. Like in the zoo. The kid couldn’t reach the railing but Charlie was able to reach and even look over the railing.

The book is in rhyme and that makes it all even more fun and playful!

I loved the Paws and Learn section in which we learn a bit more about the places that Charlie visited along with questions.

All in all, I had a lot of fun reading this one and I would recommend it. I am definitely curious about Charlie’s other adventures and I will be seeing if I can find the other books~

About the author:

Sister-author duo Sofie Wells and Ali Barclay form the writing team behind The Tales of Charlie Wags picture book series.

As daughters of immigrants, their family heritage exposed the sisters to the importance of cultural diversity early on. Their parents prioritized showing them the world, even on a tight budget, instilling in them the idea that travel is one of the best forms of education.

Knowing that not all children had the chance to explore the world firsthand, they put pen to paper to create a tale about a globetrotting dog. They hoped their story would allow young readers to experience the wonders of the world without ever having to leave their homes.

Their series mission is simple: provide a conversational understanding of the world’s most famous cities through charming stories that make far-off places accessible to every child and family.

About the illustrator:

Sanna Sjöström, known professionally as Sannadorable, has loved art her whole life. With an extensive background in watercolor painting, she found it increasingly difficult to find the time and energy for her art after having children. Realizing how quickly she could access her iPad, Sanna began experimenting with digital art, skillfully mimicking the look of watercolor.

Today, Sanna illustrates children’s books and also creates posters, cards, and digital illustration tools. Through her creations, she aims to bring joy and smiles to people’s faces.

Sanna’s distinctive style—rooted in her deep appreciation for nature and her love for finding beauty in the ordinary—brings iconic cities to life in enchanting, rose-colored hues throughout The Tales of Charlie Wags series.
