Review: Constance in Peril

Constance In Peril by Ben Manley, Emma Chichester Clark featuring a doll in the mouth of a dog who is running through the grassIn this adorable book we meet a little doll named Constance Hardpenny who was rescued by a boy named Edward.

When I saw this cover I just had to get the book from the library. I was curious how the doll had landed in that situation. Plus, I was hoping that she would have a happy life, it seemed like things weren’t going well.

This was both cute and hilarious but also at times made me angry, the brother just didn’t seem to care much about his doll and I wondered if he truly cared about her. In this book we get a week in the life of Constance and we see her get yeeted (literally because I have yet to see a kid who can throw that high normally) in a tree. Another day she is kidnapped by bullies. Yet another day she is forgotten. I just felt sorry for the doll and wished the brother would treat her better. Thankfully, each time the doll is in trouble there is the big sister, ready to defend her little brother and save Constance. She is apparently also adapt at sewing as she fixes her many times. I loved the sister, she was just the sweetest and I love that despite this being a daily occurrence she never once said no. Despite it being a bit repetitive and sad (because seriously why can’t the brother learn) I was curious about each day and what it would bring.

The illustrations by Emma Chichester Clark were wonderful and I love the style. However, at times the perspective of the doll (how big is it) was a bit off. I had noticed it a bit, but then my hubby spotted me reading this and saw how strange it looked at times and told me and since then I couldn’t unsee it. Thanks hubby. XD

All in all, despite the repetitive and the fact that the brother didn’t learn I still had fun reading this one and it did make me laugh at times because it was so chaotic/over the top. I hope that Constance one day has her sweet tea parties and calm days!
