Review: Stage Fright

Stage Fright by Wendy Parris, Stage with a hole and a strange shadow in the backOne night, one spooky scary night, friendship, and more!

Wendy Parris is definitely becoming one of the authors that I just want to read more of! I read her debut Field of Screams when it came out and when I saw this new book, well, of course I had to get it!

In  this one we meet a girl named Avery who in desperation out of losing her friends decides on a very scary plan, to do a seance at a haunted theatre! You can guess that things will get very dark! Because that ghost? Is very much real. However, what the teens don’t expect is another ghost, even more haunting than the one they were expecting to meet. This one is definitely in for pain and hurt. And things get really scary because as the story continues things escalate and escalate, possessions happen, people get hurt. The stakes are HIGH, and I love it when a horror/spooky story goes all for it, doesn’t shy away from making it very scary! I also love that there is no way out for the kids. The windows are too high or boarded up, the entrance to the theatre is closed, and that means that they have to be clever and think of something to survive the night, or figure out a way to do get help/get out.

I loved finding out more about the girl ghost and about the more menacing one. How that one appeared and how it is all connected.

I love that this book takes place over one night, it was just perfection and there is plenty of things happening. Each time you think maybe it is fine now, but then BOOM, something scary happens again.

Oh, and I love the cover! That one is just perfection and fits so well with the book!

I wasn’t always a fan of the more realistic parts, though I could also relate to them. When I was her age I definitely was still into more childish things whereas my friends were not. I lost at least one friend because of this. She was all about the boys, make-up, reality shows, and me, well I loved cartoons, didn’t care that much about boys. So I could understand Avery and her worries, she didn’t want to lose her friends. She didn’t want to lose those happy memories. But at times I just wanted the scares. And we get plenty of those, but what I mean is just the scares. No buts or ifs.

Plus, I wasn’t always a fan of the friends. I get that they probably mean well and just are growing up faster than Avery, but I found them a bit too much/too rude/too much forcing Avery into things she didn’t want and then pressuring her by taunts so she does something. I am glad that as the book progressed we saw more good sides to them and I could understand why they were/used to be such good friends.

All in all, I could talk more and more about this book but I don’t want to give too much away, so be sure to check out this book if you are in the mood for a spooky MG/Young Adult novel!
