Review: Five Fresh Donuts

Review: Five Fresh Donuts

Five Fresh Donuts by Cassie Veselovsky, cute dog holding a donut in its mouth and 3 more colourful donuts on the left sideI received this book from the author in exchange of an honest review.

I just love donuts (though sadly it is hard to find any these days that aren’t made out of soy flour/oil), I adore picture books, and I love a cute dog, so when I got the request for this fun book I had to say yes!

In this adorable book there are 5 donuts just waiting to be gobbled up and we see how each one disappears into happy stomachs (well one rolled on the floor, but that is still edible, though I guess maybe if the dog had a bite it is not that edible (note don’t feed your dogs donuts please)). With a fun rhyme we see the girl eat the donuts and share them with friends and family, I really loved that she shared them! She could have eaten them all (I would have, haha, my hubby doesn’t like donuts anyway), but instead goes outside and shares. Which I just found the sweetest! So this book doesn’t just do counting from 5 to 0 but also tells kids it is good to share (unless of course no one around you likes donuts, then by all means go ahead and eat all 5 😝).

Plus, throughout it all we see her little dog follow her everywhere and approve of her actions! Plus wearing some cute things (that little hat was just so cute).

The art is quite fun. At times things felt a bit weird/off (like some pages had various elements that didn’t entirely match together, as if it were more a patchwork of various elements found online and pasted together), but given how many people are going to AI, I can appreciate someone making their own works so I don’t mind it that much.

I always love bonuses at the end of books and this one has three! Finding round foods, a delightful colouring page, and matching donuts! So even after reading it you can have more fun~ I definitely am going to be printing out that colouring page and colour some donut friends (and try not to get too hungry, haha).

All in all, I would recommend this adorable and fun picture book to everyone.
