The second volume and Shoya is all about making amends~

It’s been a while since I read the first volume (like 10+ years), but couldn’t resist continuing this one when the library added it (slowly they are getting more and more). I remember that I was a bit unsure if I wanted to continue the series given the subject of it, but I also couldn’t resist especially since this one takes place 5 years after the events. And while it wasn’t always easy to read, I am happy I continued on with the series.

In this one we are 5 years further and Shoya is having trouble with his life after all he did he feels immense guilty, he wants to end it all, but before that he wants to go to the girl he bullied so much, Shoko, and make amends with her. While I did love that he was trying to make amends, as a person who has been bullied I do have to say that I wouldn’t be so easily to forgive Shoya (if anything if any of my bullies would appear I would slap them so hard (just like Shoko’s mom did to Shoya)), but I am happy that he tries and that he wants to become friends. I loved that he learned sign language (which is just the sweetest) and I love that he kept trying. I loved how stunned he was when he discovered that she was more than willing to chat more with him, didn’t seem angry. But then again in the flashbacks in this one we see that she at times seemed quite unfazed by it all, if that is true we don’t know as we are following Shoya’s POV. I am curious to see how things will continue between them and what Shoya’s plans are next. Well, OK, by the time this review comes out in February I will have found out and have read the rest of the books. But at the point of writing I am very curious.

The sister-subplot was just annoying me, I could get where she came from and that was not the problem but that she went that far (I mean she even started going violent with him) and even hid who she was just wasn’t sitting right with me. I would have rather have her be honest and then focus on Shoko and Shoya.

I did like that Shoya made a friend at his school. He wasn’t sure how to handle things at first, but I loved that he stepped up. I loved that he found courage to do that. And I love even more that he became friends despite knowing that his school life may not be easy due to this. He has really grown. Plus, that friend was just a hoot, I loved how open he was and how close he got to Shoya in a short amount of time.

I loved both the moms in this one. Shoko’s mom who is definitely not as forgiving as her daughter and I loved that she stood up for her daughter knowing that her daughter wouldn’t. And Shoya’s mom who just found out what her son’s plans are and is NOT amused.

The art is working much more for me, there were still moments that I wasn’t a fan, but in overal I liked it.

All in all, I am so happy I picked up this series! I probably won’t write a review for each volume, but I wanted to do it for this one because it has been so long since I read the first volume and I had plenty of thoughts on this one~
