Review: Apocalypse Cow

Apocalypse Cow by O.R. Sorrel, yellow cover with cow spots and a cow's head in a heart in the middleA superduper hilarious and oodles of fun story about what if the animals mutated and the apocalypse happened?

I have had this book in my sights for a while and I was hoping to read it one day, thankfully one of my libraries heard my wish and I found it there. This book was a hoot. Terrifying. But a hoot!

😍 Loved how things slowly went from OK to worse to terrible. At first there are some hints to that animals are being off, then there is the cow, and then poop really hits the fan.
😍 Loved the various mutated beasts and their powers. Yes, each animal has their own power. It isn’t just that all the animals are the same threat, oh no, you will have to figure out what each of them do to up your chances of survival. For instance hedgehogs go full Sonic with a bit more explosion. Ducks are mostly harmless unless you get close to their watery home. Pigs… we don’t talk about those shiver. Ravens have upped their threats and intelligence. And there are many more. I loved seeing our MC and the two others try to figure out things. It was terrifying as heck though. I mean, can you imagine trying to survive and suddenly PEW PEW an owl pops out of the forest and zaps you with laser eyes? NOPE. You never know what animal you may encounter. Fun times.. Nope.
😍 Plus, I love finding out more about other animals and see how they are safe. I won’t spoil anything, but I am glad that despite everything being hellish there are some animals you may be able to trust.
😍 I loved that despite all the happy things and the romance and the many times I laughed it was also definitely threatening and terrifying. I mean, people actually died. One died the way that Nazi did in Indiana Jones.
😍 I wasn’t sure what to think of Dorian at first, but he turned out to not be that much of an asshole. Still a rich boy with no clue how certain things worked, but a kind guy who wanted to help out and survive this stuff. He tried to help out Mel and Ella. He was pretty tough when things got going.
😍 The car rides to the town or other places and all that happened to those poor cars. Dorian is lucky to have a whole army of cars given the rate these things are molested by animals. 😆
😍 Mel x Ella. HOLY CRAP. At first I was hesitant about Ella, but then I saw she was a good egg (those sleepovers though 🙈🙈) and I saw the attraction and I was just shipping these two like mad. The only problem… Mel is oblivious to it. Haha. She notices that Ella is acting in a certain way but she doesn’t get it. I was just screaming at her to just get the hint and get kissing. I mean, at points Ella was NOT subtle about how she felt and gave plenty of hints and Mel was just not going for it. MELLLLLL GIRLLLL.
😍 Mel, Mel was such a sweet girl and I liked her instantly. I did want to shake her at times, like with her infatuation with Sasha which I just knew would end in heartbreak (though OK, I was kinda hoping I was wrong), or how at times she made some dumb decisions. But she was also strong, determined, and didn’t want to give up. No matter how scary it got, she got some amazing plans and ideas and I loved how she kept going. She had plans. She was going for it. I loved seeing her figure out things and come out much more mature at the end of it.
😍 Nev was such a sweetie. I loved them. They rocked and I loved their friendship with Mel. We don’t see them a lot when the apocalypse start, but we do get to see them later on.
😍 Loved reading how the apocalypse got started and what made animals change into this. Thankfully, no climate change. Well, OK, in a way I guess yes, but not entirely at least.
😍 The ending had me shocked, reeling, and OMGGGGGG squeeing in happiness. I told you this book did everything. I went on Goodreads so fast to see if there was a sequel, only to find out this book was from 2024 and it will be a bit before we get a sequel. NOOOOESSSS!
😍 The cover! I really like it! It just pops.

🤔😍 There was one thing I was on the fence about and that was the fact the bully was also in the same home trying to survive. But you know what, quite quickly I saw another side to this girl and as we learn more and more about her and see what happened in the past I could sympathise more. This is very rare for me, I am generally not that forgiving towards bullies. But in this case I could forgive. Plus, there was just such an undeniable attraction between the two, even if one of them (our MC) was totally oblivious to it.

🤔 As I said before, I don’t need any climate change shit in my book. I get that it is important. I understand that we are all doomed. It is just that it is already everywhere. In books I just want to go away from it all. Unless I read non-fiction of course, but you won’t see me reading anything about climate in non-fiction, haha.

All in all, I desperately need the sequel and I need it now. Please!!! I would highly recommend this book if you want something that will make you laugh, ship, and also be terrified out of your mind.
