Review: Our Wicked Histories

Our Wicked Histories by Amy Goldsmith“Fear death by water.”  An epic read full of twists and turns!

😍 Let’s start with the cover, because that is the biggest reason I got the book, haha. It is just so awesome! So haunting. So scary.
😍 I love Megs. Yes, she wasn’t always the easiest to love/like, but for most I just wanted to reach out to the book and give her a hug. She hasn’t had the easiest time, but she is trying to make amends. Sure, not entirely for the right reasons, but hey, can you blame her that one of the reasons is getting back to that school? The school that brings so many opportunities? So many future plans? I would also go for that. I loved finding out more about her and her mom, about how she got to Greyscott, about her anger issues (which made things quite unreliable at points because who is to say that Megs didn’t do the things in the book), I loved how strong she was and how she wasn’t ashamed of the fact she lived in poverty and her mom had a cleaning job, I loved that she didn’t give up when things got really scary. OK, sure, she tried twice, but when things got going she stepped up. Got brave. Kicked some ass.
😍 As I said due to Megs anger issues you never really know if everything is entirely reliable. Which I just love. It made things way more scary. Way more thrilling. Was it really a supernatural being lurking around? Or was it Megs forgetting after going in a rage?
😍 I loved the supernatural elements added, and loved that as things got further along it got scarier and scarier. There is a whole poem, there is a whole folklore story, there are all sorts of spooky hints, and oh yes, the lady that is lurking everywhere. Is it that girl? Or is it someone else? It gave me some serious goosebumps. But we also see other characters have experiences. Again, could still be unreliable given tension and the alcohol, but it cemented things a bit more for me that it wasn’t just issues but also something more.
😍 I loved that we go back and forth. We get some glimpses of the ball (not until the end we get the whole picture) but we also learn how Meg got to the school, her first months there, how she was settling nicely, about going out with her new friends, but also get to see Laure in her glory (geez what a bitch for almost all of the book), see Seb and Megs get closer (and I just never liked Seb, sorry Seb, but he just came across as a playboy, I know the type too darn well).
😍 The location with the desolate home with creaking stairs, black shrouds over portraits and mirrors, the banshee lore, the lake filled with darkness, the folly. Add to that a storm and it was just gosh darn perfect. It gave all the NOPE NOPE NOPE vibes.
😍 Things escalated so much and no one was safe.
😍 Lottie. She seems so sunshiny, so happy, but as the story continues we get more glimpses of another Lottie and I just adore how well the author brought that out.
😍 How everything got together in the end, all the deets laid out in front of us. It was epic. A whiplash of awesomeness. A rollercoaster. I was just squealing in delight while reading. And then telling Megs to fucking run. Hard. Harder.
😍 Charlie. The only one I fully trusted in the friendship group and I loved how supportive he was to Megs. How he was a true friend.
😍 I love that there was so much painting and I wish I could have seen the works for real. Well, OK, maybe not Lottie’s, haha. Those were terrifying.

😕 Joss, Ollie, Laure can all just fuck off. What a turd heap of characters that was.
😕 Seb can also just fuck off with his charismatic BS.
😕 Megs, I love you girl, but you should know talking about Banshees and all is maybe not a good idea, especially given how some of your “friends” are feeling at the moment.

All in all, HECK this was an awesome read and I would highly recommend it!
