Review: The Egg Incident

Review: The Egg Incident

The Egg Incident by Ziggy Hanaor and Daisy Wynter featuring an egg boy looking with terrified eyes at the falling letter t from the titleRemember Humpty Dumpty? Well you are about to meet his family in this hilarious and fun graphic novel!

I was at first not sure if I would like it/should take it from the library but I am happy I took the chance yesterday and picked this one up. This was so much fun!

Meet Humphrey, a little egg-shaped (and real egg even) kid who is AFRAID of everything. Why is he afraid of everything? Well, not just because of his overprotective parents who constantly pepper him with warnings and rules, but also because his uncle is Humpty Dumpty. You know, the egg who took a fall and then BOOM couldn’t be fixed and was never the same again? I could definitely understand that both Humphrey and his parents were terrified of going out of the house or even moving. If you know that a small tumble will cause you to crack, well, I would also just stick inside or even wrap myself in bubble wrap, haha.

In this book Humphrey goes outside, he has plans to go to the park and just enjoy a nice slow stroll. Well, it takes him forever to get there because again he doesn’t dare to walk fast or even run (poor guy). But when he gets there and is enjoying himself (with the exception of that time when a granny wanted to run him over because he was so slow, granny what??) he meets up with a girl with boundless energy and she asks him if he wants to play. The only things he wants to do is nothing. I loved the juxta-position between the very cautious egg boy and the very hyper and enthusiastic girl. Who is by the way is a princess. But you can call her PJ! But what happens when Humphrey and PJ get locked in the park? What happens if Humphrey has to face his biggest fear. A wall. Yup. You know, because of his uncle who did a tumble of it and then splatter? I was rooting for Humphrey because I saw that despite all the fear and the panic he was discovering something new and got so happy about it, he saw a future. I saw a kid who just wanted to be free and I was rooting for him. Hoping that maybe he was not as breakable as his uncle so he could have a lot of fun!

But what happens next and also the truths we find out? They made me gasp. I had expected A LOT of things but not this. Oh my gosh. Why didn’t that person ever tell the family? I loved what Humphrey did next after all he found out. It was such a sweet thing of him to do and while it terrified those people it was needed. Now this sounds like he is committing a murder, but no worries, nothing like that. It is all just sugar and sweetness and it made me smile.

The art in this one was also fun and I like the style.

All in all, I had a lot of fun in this book, a nice spin on the Humpty Dumpty tale.
