Review: The Raccoons – Cry Wolf + The Raccoons Colouring Book

The Raccoons - Cry Wolf by John Peel, Terry CooperI received these two books from the publisher in exchange of an honest review.

I got the request to review these last year and in February I decided to go for it! I was delighted that there were books coming out. When I got the request I was like, the name sounds familiar, I went to look it up and was like, wait, I saw this show back when I was a kid. I don’t remember 100% everything as it has been long and I was young, but I remember that I really enjoyed the show when it was on TV. So of course I had to say yes to these books! Let’s go on the Nostalgia Train, choo choo!

First up The Raccoons – Cry Wolf Which I gave: Star rating, 3 stars. While I did like the story at points, the writing style just didn’t click with me. It was too descriptive. It just went on an on and I feel that it could have been shortened a bit to make it more succinct and more fun to read. This style is perfect for the show but in book form it just isn’t working. But the story was fun. Bert is eager (a bit too eager) to be a super reporter for the newspaper, but he forgets one thing, it all needs to be truth. He wants to write about hurricanes and big big things happening which only happen in Bert’s super imagination. Everything that may seem small to everyone else is HUGE in Bert’s mind. And that is where the Cry Wolf part comes from, we all know the story. The boy who cried wolf a few too many times and when things really started to happen no one believed him. And that is what happens here too. Because Bert has discovered a big dangerous plot and no one believes him (to be fair if I hadn’t been there with Bert I would have also nodded my head and told him it was OK). I loved that Bert took charge though and I loved seeing him try all sorts of things to get proof. Plus, while Sneer isn’t my favourite character (never been), it was interesting to get his POV and see why he was planning all these bad things. Too be honest, if I had such sleep issues I would also want silence. I loved seeing how things continued and how it all got resolved. This book just gave me all the fun nostalgic vibes. I haven’t seen the show in many years and I had to get back into it a bit, but it was as if I never left when I got into it. Love that! And then there are the delightful fun illustrations which made me smile!

The Raccoons Colouring Book by TBCNext up the colouring book! Which I gave: Star rating, 3 stars This colouring book is about 20+ pages featuring scenes from the series along with quotes to go with it. This one really brought all the nostalgic vibes and I really liked seeing the various scenes. A lot of them made me laugh and I like that! I haven’t yet had the chance to colour any as that would mean I have to print out the pages and we are currently out of paper, haha. While I did enjoy it and like the idea, I feel that it could have been a bit bigger. A bit more. Not just colouring page after colouring page, but maybe also puzzles or smaller images that form a story to colour.

All in all, I am happy that I had the chance to read these two books. I also got the other two books in the series, I am currently thinking on reading them or not. They are written by different authors, so maybe in the next the writing style does feel better. For now I am putting it on hold, but who knows maybe one day I will review the others~
