Review: I Hated You in High School

I Hated You in High School by Kathleen Gros, Two girls on the cover looking at each other with a heart behind themI received this book from Edelweiss/the publisher in exchange of an honest review.

I was immediately intrigued by the title of the book plus the cover, so I had to request this one when I could and I am happy I was able to read this one!

😘 Tessa was such a fun character and I loved seeing her try to figure out things. She just lost her job before going to her parents + she wants to do something creative but hasn’t found any way to make money with it. And money is important if you want to keep renting an apartment and have food. I loved that she went to her parents even though she knew that Olive was there. And I loved that she was open to talking to Olive (OK, after some repeated pushes from friends and family, haha). And I loved that she opened up more and more to Olive. That she saw that Olive wasn’t the bad guy, or at least not anymore. But I also loved that we got all her worries, see her talk to her bestie and roommate on the phone, love that she didn’t bottle anything up but instead talked talked and talked.
😘 Olive. Well, as soon as we got a more clear view on what motivated her to be an ass during high school. Before that I wasn’t sure what to think of her and found it weird how close she was with the parents of Tessa (she is renting their basement as an apartment). But then we find out that she just didn’t know what to do with her feelings, she was so happy with her boyfriend, but then also found herself finding Tessa attractive. I can imagine that it wasn’t easy, especially with how people reacted at times. I don’t forgive her for what she did, it was shitty, but I am glad that she was able to talk to Tessa and I loved that she was bi. As a bi girl myself I love seeing more bi girls. And as the story continued I started liking her more and more. She was such a sweet character.
😘 The roommate/bestie, aka Frankie. They wer such a fun character and I loved how they didn’t mind that Tessa at times was ranting/raving, instead supported her. And I love how well these two got on and how they both hoped to find a good future. Seeing them call and text while Tessa was at her parents was fun, Frankie really wanted all the deets and it made me laugh. Oh, and I loved when she made the presentation for her birthday and PRIDE which both fell on the same day this year. It made me laugh and I was cheering.
😘 I liked that we found out what happened during high school through diaries (apparently Tessa was a big diary writer).
😘 It was so fun to see her reconnect with old friends from school. I guess that is the advantage of a smaller town? I mean, I never really encounter anyone when I visit my home city, haha, but then again there are thousands of people there (these days around 300k, haha). Then again, I don’t even have their phone numbers anymore.
😘 OMG OMG Tessa x Olive! When they FINALLY talked FINALLY got things out of the way, holy hell, YASSSSS! I was just squeeing and throwing confetti (imaginary, I am much too tired at the point of writing this in January for it to be real) when things really set off. WHOO! FINALLY!
😘 And the ending was just SWOON! GO Frankie! What a fantastic friend! I was just squeeing in delight again~
😘 And we even get a Frankie epilogue, YASSSSS! I love it when books add an epilogue to let us know how characters are doing after x time.
😘 The art was so fun! I liked the style. Though some bits didn’t work in the colour scheme. Like during the PRIDE, I eventually figured it out which flag it was (also based on Frankie using they/their), but it would have been nice to have just a pop of colour there.

🀨 But who the heck makes a party for their parents wedding anniversary? I get the parents hosting a party when they reached a milestone, generally dinner though, haha. But having the kids arrange it all including cake testing? Um? That was just weird in my eyes.

All in all, I had fun reading this one. Sometimes a tad slow, but then I would just be so invested again. Fab characters. Sweet romance! A bi character (LOVE). I would recommend it.
