Review: Motherlover

Motherlover by Lindsay Ishihiro, Two woman lying on the grass looking at each otherI received this book from Edelweiss in exchange of an honest review.

This is a comic I had tried to read some time back, but then forget about it. So I was super hyped to see it pop up on Edelweiss, of course I had to get it! Finally I could read it all in one go~

In this gorgeous book we meet two women, both mothers. One is Imogen who has 4 kids (lots of chaos) and then there is Alex who just recently moved to her old parents home with her daughter Nolan. From the start you could just see the connection between these two women. However, Imogen is still married and so nothing can happen. And I am also thankful that nothing, other than some light flirting and banter, is happening. For most of the book these two women are friends, you can see that both are hoping for more (and Alex even has some fun dreams at a time), but I love that they waited until Imogen’s marriage is fully over before confirming their feelings. I was definitely worried that maybe Imogen and Alex would just go for it, I mean, for most of the book they are living together because of Imogen’s piece of trash husband and Imogen and the kids needing a home. But nope. Though I have to say I was definitely shipping them both and just shouting at my book for Imogen to just leave her piece of trash husband (he was so sus) and get the divorce over with. Because I wanted the two of them together. They have such chemistry.

I loved that it wasn’t just about two mothers/two women finding love/a place to belong, but also about more. We learn that Alex’ parents weren’t the best even if she is trying to downplay it. But as the story continues we see that she is definitely not doing OK and that there are a lot of lingering issues. The biggest problem for her was that they never were physical. But as she finds out there is also another kind of abuse. Emotional. Manipulative. One that I definitely know from my parents (though my dad was also at times physical which when I was a kid thought it was just part of how parents were, and now as an adult I know that my parents were both not OK). We see her struggle with that, try to figure things out and find a healthier mental health that doesn’t mean her shutting herself away or getting angry when things are too much.

And then there is Imogen who dropped out of college to take care of her baby and who soon after found her now husband and got 3 more kids. She is a stay at home mom and she is fine with it… but is she really? We see her actually wanting to go back to college, to do some fun classes, and to find a job. Not just that, she knows her feelings for Alex and we see her try to figure out what that means because for most of her life she has been with guys. I loved seeing her get a chance to explore that and find people who were there for her. I was really rooting for her.

Then there is the piece of trash husband who I immediately didn’t trust/like, but when we found out how he controls the money and how things got steadily worse in that direction I was even more on kicking him out. But that is definitely not the worst. Oh no.

Plus, one of Imogen’s kids has something to confess and I loved how Imogen handled that and how she tried to figure it out and how accepting she was. I love how the kid found the courage to talk to it, plus even went to Alex and asked questions about LGBT/figuring things out. I loved seeing the time pass by in the story and see them get more confident and grow into the person they want to be.

I loved how time passed. At times I had to recheck to make sure I didn’t miss anything, but I am happy with the passing of time as it was. Because a divorce isn’t done in days, so I am happy that we didn’t get a day by day bit, instead time just moved a bit faster and we got glimpses/important parts.

I do love an epilogue!! Thank you for that~

And lastly, I loved the art! I love that Imogen is plus-size and feeling OK in her skin.

All in all, haha, I could just talk on and on about this book, this was just so good! I would HIGHLY recommend this one to all. Shipping, hoping that the piece of trash husband just fucks off, fantastic characters, diversity, lots of love, and more!
