Review: Shiver Point: Beneath the Ghostly Graves

Shiver Point Beneath the Ghostly Graves by Gabriel Dylan, a group of kids surrounding a grave with a ghost behind them over the titleThis time we are going to the graveyard and play with a spooky ghost!

I was curious to see who would be the main character in this one. The other kids are also getting their say, but the main character and whose story it actually is is this time Mo! I really love that each story featuring one of the kids as the main star and has a story catered to them specifically. OK, Mo isn’t exactly my favourite character because at times his scaredy-cat ways get a tad annoying. I mean, I am all for being afraid of the dark, but being afraid of every noise, every sound, everything?? A bit too much. So yeah, while I was excited about this new story, I was also kinda on the fence. But I can tell you all that while I found Mo annoying quite a few times I am also happy to see him get stronger, braver, and trying his best to not be so scared. I loved seeing him fully go for things even when he knew it would be hard, everything to get his brother back.

The spooky subject this time is a ghost named Blue Bessie. She has been haunting the graveyard for a long long time and well all she wants is making friends along with playing with them. She is lonely. At first I wasn’t sure how I felt about BB, especially since summoning her was very much like Bloody Mary and things definitely got terrifying, but as the story continued and we got hints about her past I just wanted to give her a big hug.

The games that the kids had to play were a lot of fun but terrifying as heck as well. A maze you need to escape. Be silent and find the key (forgot the name of that one as it is not one I ever heard of). Green Light Red Light (aka Annemaria Koekoek in Dutch). There are terrifying skeletons, tons of rats, spooky ghosts, and more. It was amazing.

But here are two things I didn’t like. 1) I get that they were under time crush but a lot of things in the maze could have been avoided if they had just taken their time, listened to the others, listened to intuition. It just frustrated me and I was GAHHHHH, just READ and THINK.
And on number 2) Sophia was just an utter bitch. I am sorry, but she was so FIXATED on the ghost being bad, so FIXATED on destroying a child’s toy just because she read in a book that to banish a ghost you have to burn their shit. Which fair, but seriously, Mo is clearly telling you to NOT do it, and instead of listening to your best friend you do that kind of crap. I wanted to slap Sophia so hard. So many times.

But despite some issues, I did have fun reading this one and I flew through it reading it in one go. I am curious what is next for our group and what kind of spooky/scary stuff is next.
