Review: Toshi Densetsu-senpai/The Urban Legend Files, Vol.1
University has never been this fun! Say hello to urban legends, supernatural stuff, and more! With a dash of humour~
I came across this one in my Manga PLUS app and of course I had to read it! Everyone who knows me knows I love urban legends, the spookier the better, and this one sounded too much fun!
Meet Mokume, a girl who just started university. And a very specific one. Because she loves urban legends, wants to meet them close, and what better than to go to an university that has a guy who attracts those urban legends? Plus, an university that has an occult club! I loved this girl instantly, I mean, I would have done the same as her, haha. If I was that dedicated to something and an university had that? I would go for that. But her hopes are quickly dashed when she finds the club almost abandoned and the senpai nowhere near. I loved that she didn’t give up and even thought of a plan to get the senpai onboard of her adventures. Haha, some people will do anything for that.
Their first adventure is finding Kuchike-Onna, you know the woman who wears a mask and stalks people and asks if she is pretty. Our MC really really wants to meet her and talk to her. Well, she is in luck, the senpai is clearly the real deal. I loved how chaotic this adventure was and all that happened when they did meet her. There is a chase, there are scary moments, there are offerings, and our senpai is clearly wondering if the deal he made with our MC is worth it. I don’t blame him. I loved the answer he used with the Kuchike-Onna and then there is the rest that happens after, and no, you will have to read the manga. This first urban legends/youkai sets the tone for the rest of the manga. I was curious what was next!
Well, we also get the Charlie Game, a man that appears in dreams, and something that us DandaDan readers know, Jet Granny. We see the occult group get together again and go after these youkai/urban legends or try to figure out what is going on. I really loved that the group came together again, it is sure an eclectic bunch. A guy who attracts urban legends/youkai but doesn’t want that (I can understand that), a girl who looks like Sadako and likes to nail straw dolls to trees, a girl who looks like 10 but is the club president and loves cryptids (she is dedicated so much it made me giggle at times), there is a guy who looks like he belongs to a sports club more than the occult club.
I loved that things really got creepy/scary at times, but then there is a dash of humour that relieves the tension. Like with Jet Granny, they had to leave ASAP as Granny was there and the guy who looks like he should be in a sports club had to just keep up with the car.
The art was also a lot of fun, I really like the style. The characters designs were perfect and I loved how the youkai/urban legends were drawn.
All in all, I need more of this series and I hope that it will get plenty of volumes. I would recommend this if you like urban legends/youkai with a dash of humour!
