Review: The Nightmare Brigade: The Girl from Déjà Vu
What if you can enter nightmares and help out people? What if things are not what they seem?
I was looking for a book to read for my LEWA book challenge bingo and discovered I still had some recommendations open on Goodreads including one for this book by Courtney. Thanks Courtney!
I loved the idea of a nightmare machine that allows people to enter nightmares and help out the person. Like what if you have such big fears that you cannot sleep at night because you will be visited by nightmares, like the guy who kept dreaming about Chernobyl or a lady full of radiation. It is great that there is a team that can help out and make sure to defeat what is going on together with you of course. The nightmares we get were pretty terrifying, the author really did a great job on that and the illustrator did a great job bringing them to life. Thanks for the nightmares. 😉
Esteban and Tristan are both fabulous characters and I could definitely understand that Tristan wasn’t minding going to nightmares given that in real life he is in a wheelchair, but in the dream/nightmare world he can just walk around on two legs. I loved how both of them worked like an oiled machine and tried everything to help the people out they were hired to help. They tried to figure out things fast, tried to think of ways to fix things, and more.
Sarah, well, I had to get used to her. I loved her determination, and that even when things went south she kept being herself, however I hope that in the next one she learns a bit more tact and learns to act a bit more. At times things almost went wrong (or went wrong) because she did something (like taking a photograph in the dream/nightmarescape). Or said something. I am definitely curious about Sarah though, because just like Esteban she was found wandering without a memory of anything. And Esteban has the feeling he knows her.
I wasn’t such a fan of the guy in the cell (then again I guess we are supposed to dislike him) and the classmate who just can’t seem to understand that the girl isn’t interested in him anymore. I wonder how far he will go to get what he wants.
There were some bonus dossiers/information parts between the chapters/parts, I did like them, but they were just unreadable when the cursive font was around. Even with my glasses I just couldn’t read a bit of it, well, OK, if I stared really well and did super duper my best I could decipher bits of it, but that just made my head hurt. It would be nice if there was more focus on readability over having a nice fancy font.
The art was really good! Spooky and creepy in all the right moments.
All in all, I need the next book, especially with the cliffhanger at the end. Or I should say, with the ENORMOUS truth just unveiled. I didn’t expect that! I would recommend this one to all searching for a spooky/mysterious graphic novel. This is a good one for Halloween!
