Review: Deadstream
Streaming is fun, but what is that behind the streamers? What is targeting them? Will you open the door?
๐ Let’s start with the cover, that is just amazing. So spooky!
๐ Our MC, Teresa or Replay, was such an interesting character. We see that she is stuck to her room after an accident that left her grieving her best friend. Her anxiety, her mental health is so bad that she just cannot leave. We read about the accident as the story continues and we also see how her world got smaller and smaller until it was just her room. Later on when things get spookier we also see her fear magnify and get bigger. I just wanted to step in the story many times to just give her a big hug (and wish that her family would understand things a bit better because at this point only the dad seemed to be mostly understanding). Teresa has found her love in streaming and watching streams. She makes reaction clips and that is how things get started. Because during a stream of a popular streamer there is something in the shadows. Watching. Telling to open the door. Of course, Teresa has to make a clip of things. Which, as a horror lover was something that had me going NOPE NOPE NOPE. I loved that she was eager to solve the mystery when things got spookier. I loved how she tried to help even when her own situation got more scary.
๐ The ghost/whatever is haunting the streamers. Holy crap. I was definitely not happy with shadows (at night) while I read this one. Thanks for the nightmares.
๐ Finding out what/who the ghost is and why they are doing things. I loved how we got more and more information on that.
๐ I loved that next to normal chapters we also get social media, chats, transcripts, and much more. It made it a real experience and I love it when books mix up on how to tell the story.
๐ I loved that there was also gender identity/LGBT representation. It felt perfectly in line with the story and I loved seeing our MC discover what she is and who she loves.
๐ It was just fab to see love conquer all, sure it felt a bit weird with how she did that after so long of not being able to do that, but I will take it because it also made me happy. Plus, I was just so happy that we got to see that character finally, which of course let me to some ship ship shippity moments. Which made things a bit lighter.
๐ The possession/when she did open the door. OK, it was done with horror stupidity (I mean, on the one hand I can understand on the other I was just DOH when she did that), but after that things got so tense and OMG, and WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK, so I can forgive it.
๐ When the ghost really decides that now is the time to just fuck it all. At first it seemed like just a mass sleeping event, but we all knew that it was more than that. I loved how our MC figured things out and tried to help people.
๐ That part with the Uber driver was just so messed up but it upped the stakes a lot.
๐ Also thanks author for terrifying me of doors at night. ๐
๐คจ But I am not entirely sold on the ending and how that went. I mean, I just wasn’t a fan that it felt very open and that while things were resolved for most she was still stuck in a way. I would have liked more closure.
But all in all, I would highly recommend this fantastic book that was both terrifying and sad.
