Review: Beanie the Bansheenie
A gorgeous picture book featuring a Bansheenie named Beanie!
Of course I couldn’t resist this book when I spotted it over at the library. The cover just lured me in and add to that Eoin Colfer, I needed this book and I can tell you that I would highly recommend this gorgeous book!
In this book we learn all about Banshees. How they can tell when someone dies. How they howl to tell the world about that death that is upcoming. But there is so much more to it. Did you know that young Banshees are called Bansheenies? That if a bansheenie sees their person they know everything and anything about that person. I loved how it expanded on the banshee lore and it is quite an interesting idea to make it so that they bond with their person. So that all sounds wonderful, but what happens when a tiny bansheenie sees her human… but then before everything is clicked she gets flushed away and ends up growing up between the fishes (who really become her family and friends which I absolutely loved). All along Beanie is keeping an eye on her human and I loved despite the bad start Beanie never gave up and I was excited to see her get to really meet her human named Rose.
What happens next was just so much fun (and gorgeously illustrated) though also a tad sad because we find out that Beanie, due to her rocky start, isn’t able to do her howl. And she needs that howl to help Rose. I was just hoping and rooting that she would find a way. That she would find something to make sure her human (and her family) would be safe. I won’t tell you what is next but I can that there is a happy ending!
I loved that the book didn’t just stop at Rose’s childhood but we get glimpses of the after which I really appreciated.
The art? SUPER DUPER gorgeous. Seriously, I want some of these printed and on my walls. They are just that good.
So wonderful character (Beanie is the best), gorgeous art, wonderful story, emotions everywhere, and again, recommended!
