Review: The Bellwoods Game
Welcome to a very special Halloween, it is time to play a game. Who will reach the bell? Who will disappear?
π» It was great that we got a bit before the story really started with Abigail as POV and see what happened to her on the day she disappeared. That poor girl.
π» The Bellwoods Game and what it entails. Three chosen kids. One big forest. One bell to ring. Bring something special to you in case the ghost gets you. Spooky things in the forest. You win and you get a prize + you save the town. If you don’t ring… no one rings… doom is coming. I already loved the idea of that game and I loved how the kids were chosen (that is a pretty fair way to go for it), but add to that the prospect of a ghost haunting you and finding you. I wanted to be part of it!
π» OK, that changed when we meet the Fake-Abigail. Yup. We have two ghosts. We have Abigail who is the good ghost and is trying her hardest but suffering from years of the games and the fake Abigail souring her memories, but we also have Fake-Abigail who is stealing memories, messing up your brain, stealing your things. And that last one? That one was scary. At that point I was like HELL NAH I will just stay out of the woods, thank you kindly. I was terrified each time that Fake-Abigail popped up and did their things. They were just heck nope.
π» I loved seeing the three kids chosen, though the childhood friend was meh (he was an ass), but Carmen was actually fun and I loved how smart she was and how she tried her best to help out. I loved the item she picked to bring along, it really turns out to be a handy tool in a dangerous game. And Bailee was just such a sweet character.
π» Bailee, I really loved her though I wanted to give her a hug at times because she hasn’t had the easiest time. At school she is shunned. Her grandma may die. But she keeps going, and I love her collection of spooky tales and I love how smart she is and how quick she is at her feet. How she helps her friends even when things are terrifying her to death.
π» I loved the various fears/memories that were brought to life. Be afraid. Be very afraid. I was already glad no one had clowns. The spiders were bad, but imagine clowns. NOPE.
π» The illustrations were just fantastic, they made the story even more terrifying and scared the wits out of me.
π» The various urban legends from the town. I would love another book with Bailee and a new spooky tale!
π» The last part of the game and all that happened there. It was just amazing and I was just so excited. Yes, I am keeping it vague, if you want to know why I am so excited? Read the book, haha.
π» The last bit of the book, I had my suspicions somewhere but wasn’t sure, but WOW.
π» Also learning about the past of the bell and how it used to be before the game? Afraid of the dark anyone?? I loved that!
π I didn’t like how no one cared to ask Bailee about why she was talking to the boss of the school. OK, sure, she had a hard time expressing her, but from the sound of everything it sounds like it is a small town, and we all know how small towns in books are, so people should have heard about Bailee’s grandma getting sick ON THAT DAY. Seriously.
π Loved the best friend… until a certain moment.
All in all though, holy I am so happy I got this book and was able to read it. I would highly recommend if you are in the mood for a spooky read~
