Review: The Little Bird Sleeps by the Sea
I received this book from Edelweiss in exchange of an honest review.
Oh wow, this was such an emotional rollercoaster! Loss, grief, finding love, figuring out parenting, and more!
π First up the cover and the art style inside. It is so pretty!
π Yuichi was such a sweet character and I love how he choose to take care of his nephew even if he knew it wouldn’t be easy. After all, he has no experience with taking care of kids, he can only cook small bits, the grief and loss he feels over not just his sister but also his parents. But I love that he tried his best. That he moved Ayumu and himself to a new town, tried to get back home in time to make/get dinner and to tuck Ayumu in, tried to talk to him (even though Ayumu didn’t make things easy).
π Ayumu wasn’t always the easiest to like. I get that he is a kid and that he is still grieving and trying to heal, but at times I wish he would just be a bit more kinder and more talkative to his uncle. Who is doing everything for Ayumu. Thankfully, later in the story they finally talk and I was just delighted. I hope that Ayumu talks more to his uncle, tells him more, not keep it all cropped up.
π YASSS! Mr. Deli (sorry, I just love that nickname)/Ryo is Bi/Pan! When he confesses his feelings early on he tells Yuichi this: “I swing both ways.. equally.” YESS, YESSS!
π On that note, I just adore Ryo. Sure, at times I want to shake him a bit for how he is, but I love how was there for Yuichi and Ayumu and how he tried to make them both happy. He was there when Ayumu was at the beach and talked to him. He was there for Yuichi when Yuichi came from work to get some food at the deli. And a bit later came by at times.
π Love getting backstories on characters, in this case Ryo! He is such a mysterious and kind person and I was curious what happened in his past that he at times is doing what he is. Nothing bad, but he apparently has a reputation and can be a bit touchy.
π The chemistry between the two, WOW, it was so good. It just jumped off the pages and I was just rooting for the two to get dating. Not too fast of course, I could see Ryo had his issues and Yuichi was still very much grieving and everything was new. So I was hoping for some kisses, maybe something more. Well, the manga definitely is giving us some good stuff.
π Things escalate, there are some arguments, but in the end I love that these two guys talk about things and listen to each other.
π The sex scenes, nothing over the top as with some M/M manga but just perfectly sweet and hot.
π I always love it when books close with an after-story or epilogue and this one gives us one! And it is perfect. I definitely loved it all, but those last panels made me tear up.
π I loved that there were so many beach scenes. Ayumu picking up sea glass. Ryo thinking about his past and talking to Ayumu. Ryo, Ayumi, and Yuichi together. I want some sea glass now as well!
π‘ When we got to see the co-workers of Yuuichi I just wanted to punch them. He is doing his work. Geez, imagine him going home early (or I should at a normal time) because HE HAS A KID at home. What do you want him to do? Stay until 10pm and just abandon the kid? WTF.
All in all, an emotional read so bring tissues. I am so glad I got the chance to read this one! Recommended!
