Review: The War of Greedy Witches, Vol. 1
It is time to duuuueeelll! Say hello to 32 women from history, all greedy witches, who will have to battle to get their wishes fulfilled.
I am so happy with Comics Plus, thanks to that one I discover so many fabulous fun comics and manga. Including this one! I saw this one pop up and just had to read it. The cover called me and I loved the premise and was curious who, next to Jean d’Arc, was going to fight for their wishes and desires.
In this one we meet Jean D’Arc (she will be the main character I am guessing) and see her past, see her fights, see her youth, and see her get burned at the stake. But that is when things change for her. She is getting the chance to live again. Of course, me being me, I saw two cute demons and was like NOPE, don’t fall for it, no matter how cute. But then again, if you are burning at the stake… I guess you just don’t have much choice. And from that moment the story truly starts. We see Jean come into a room filled with hooded figures, we get a speech by the demon queen, we hear about the stakes. The loser will never ever ever get reincarnated (ouch though in some cases that is fine with me given that there are some in this group that you just don’t want back on earth) and the winner will get their deepest wish/desire fulfilled.
I loved all the big names, Agatha Christie, Mary Read, Orihime, Cleopatra, Agatha Christie to name a few. Some I don’t know or only vaguely, but I will definitely be excited for each of the witches/ladies who will appear, it quite a fun idea to pick famous ladies from history and have them duke it out. I have no clue on accuracy but from the three we have seen so far that I recognise it seems to go at least mostly accurate.
In this first volume we get a glimpse of Antoinette’s powers, and a lot of glimpses at Bathory and Gozen. How they match with their desires, their history, what they did. From Bathory and her powers being all torture to Gozen’s samurai prowess. The battle between these two was a freaking ride, but at times a bit much given how Bathory goes for torture. That fingernail brought back the PTSD I got from that scene in Higurashi 🤢🤢🤢🤢. But despite how gory it got I couldn’t stop reading. Though I was definitely rooting for Gozen. Bathory is already a nope for me and given how craycray she got eh nope.
I am wondering if each of the volumes will feature the battle between two witches because then we will be here for a while. There are 16 preliminary matches. I hope that along the way we get something different or that things won’t take almost a whole volume. Maybe two or three matches per volume? I will at least give it a go because I am curious, but if it is just one battle at a time with some hints to Jean, I will probably drop it.
I do love seeing and getting to know Jean more. We see her struggle, but also see her wonder if she has a desire. Because everyone has one, most of them very clearly, and Jean just doesn’t know what she wants, which is logical given her past and her parents and everything. But I am happy with the ending of this volume and what happened there.
The art was pretty kick-ass. I like the designs for the girls and I am curious to see the rest of the witches!
All in all, this was a really kick-ass volume and I will definitely keep on reading. If you like famous people x witches x fights that go to the death x fab art try this one out!
